What are the intellectual effects of eating disorders?

There can be many intellectual effects of healthy eating, however it can depend on the persons overall mental attitude. Generally, however, healthy eating supplies the body with more lasting, substantial energy and therefore the person will tend to be less moody or tired, and will be able to concentrate a lot more on any tasks at hand. By being able to concentrate on the current tasks, the brain is able to focus more and people become less distracted, making it easier, for example, for student t concentrate in class and improve their intellectual capabilities in school work.

The brain is one of the most important organs in the body to keep well fed. A healthy diet will help keep the mind clear and will help nerve connections with the brain.

The overall intellectual benefit of healthy eating is being able to keep the brain focused by supplying it with substantial energy and, therefore, being more focused and clear minded.

Are you on your way to an eating disorder if you haven't eaten in the last weak and when you do eat you feel guilty?

Hi I would say you are well on your way, but the good news is that you seem to have recognized it early, so it will be easier to help yourself. If you haven't eaten much or anything at all for a week, it would be impossible for you to eat a "normal-sized meal" so don't try it because it will probably make you feel worse. Try eating a little roast chicken breast, or maybe some scrambled eggs, as both are easily digested. To find a therapist close to you who specializes in eating disorders, go to Psychology Today's website where you can download the profiles of local therapists based on your zip code. You can then pick the one you like the look of best. Meantime, because they may not be able to get in right away, you should see your doctor as soon as you can. While it takes longer than a week to starve to death (as long as you are drinking something) you probably aren't in great shape and he might think you need a few days in the hospital to help you get stronger. Is kelly ripa aware of her anorexia?

Whether or not Kelly Ripa is in fact anorexic, yes she would be "aware". You know what you are, and you know that what you are doing is wrong, but you are too consumed in the feeling that you can't stop. So obviously, she would know if she was. But it's her secret to keep.

Why do you fall asleep every time you eat?

You could have narcolepsy or sleep apnea.

You could have hypoglycemia. Your body's ability to store glucose is impaired or you have a parasite stealing your glucose so you feel alright or even ecstatic for a short time after eating then fall asleep. Look into what could have caused this for you (eg. particular medications especially antibiotics) then get your metabolism and digestion back on track through:

1) exercise

2) drinking plenty of water

3) staying away from foods full of simple sugars (like cakes, chocolate, biscuits, icecream) and white flour, rice, pasta and pastry. These make you feel great for a short time, then crash. Don't drink fruit juice - eat the whole fruit.

4) trying to eat smaller amounts throughout the whole day instead of a few large meals

5) eating a raw salad every day. If you are at the point where even a raw salad is putting you to sleep, eat some high protein food with it eg. lentils, beans, dairy, meat and some 'good' fats eg. olives, avocados, nuts and seeds.

When you are crashing, instead of reaching for a chocolate bar, try cinnamon in milk or yogurt, or a banana rolled in cinnamon and coconut.

If your hypoglycemia is caused by candidiasis, you can kill it by eating probiotics eg. unsweetened yogurt, garlic and onions. Note that when you start to kill the candida, you will probably feel worse for a while before you feel better. If the candida is in your blood stream killing it can induce depression, anxiety, extreme rage and psychosis. This is extremely serious. If you have any indications of these symptoms, do not attempt to kill the candida unsupervised, and take it extremely slowly.

Following these guidelines may take a few weeks to start working, depending on what stage you are at with the hypoglycemia. Even when you have recovered, you will find that these are good guidelines for everyone to follow to stay healthy.

A lot of people with undiagnosed hypoglycemia and/or candidiasis start avoiding carbohydrates altogether even complex carbs eg. follow Aitkens. This may provide short term relief, but your body needs the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants found in fruit and vegetables. They are absolutely essential to your health. Don't kid yourself into thinking that a good supplement can replace fruit and vegetables in your diet. Following any diet that does not include a mixture of protein, carbohydrates and fats will make you unwell.

Can anorexia recur?

Why anorexia affect circulatory system?

In order to work properly, the heart requires adequate amounts of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and other electrolytes in a certain balance. If these components are not present in the required amounts the electrical activity of the heart is interrupted. This is what happened to the 70's singer, Karen Carpenter. She had anorexia and did not take in enough food to supply her heart with what it needed and she died from a cardiac arrest. Her heart just stopped beating because it had no more fuel on which to run. Anorexia also destroys the other organs in the body and the muscles as well because the body thinks it is being starved to death, which it actually is, and begins to feed off of itself. Other people have gone into kidney failure and required dialysis for what time they lived after that; some people have messed up their intestines to the point where they will never work the same again. Anorexia is very dangerous. It is a compulsion and requires professional intervention. If you are the anorexic, please get help for yourself! You are worth so much more than just starving yourself to death for what you think is an attractive body image.

What is an eating disorder besides eating too little or too much?

Anorexia, bulimia and compulsive/binge eating disorder are the three most heard of eating disorders. But there are others too:

  • EDNOS (now diagnosed as OSFED in countries using the DSM-V criteria), this stands for eating disorder not otherwise specified, and is diagnosed when people have combined behaviours or don't fit the full criteria for one of the main three disorders
  • Pica disorder, where people have an appetite for non-food items, such as paper or plastic
  • Rumination disorder, this is only newly recognised as an eating disorder, but it's when people (most likely children) will bring up undigested food only for it to be re-swallowed, re-chewed or spat out
  • Selective eating disorder, where someone may only eat foods of a certain category, such as texture or taste
  • Diabulimia, a very dangerous form of bulimia, where sufferers of type 1 diabetes will tamper with their insulin intake to help control their weight

There are many others too, but a lot of them are either subdisorders of EDNOS and will be diagnosed as EDNOS, or they are not formally recognised and can't be diagnosed, or they are a form of body dysmorphic disorder (which is an anxiety disorder, not an eating disorder).

How much weight can you lose by starving yourself for two weeks?

Every person is different, but I can tell you that starving yourself will not help you lose weight. Your body will actually start to hold onto weight after about 3 days of starving yourself and anything with fat that you put into your body will go straight for the fat reserves. Your body will think it is headed for hard times and that it will need all the fat it can take. So you would hurting your body more than anything, probably even gaining weight once you do decide to eat. Also, you could cause yourself a heart or brain problems from starving yourself. That is what happened to Terri Schiavo, her extreme dieting methods caused her brain damage. Be smart about weight loss, the simple method that works is to cut your calorie intake and start exercising. There is no easy way around it and especially if you want to lose weight and keep it off.
