Epilepsy is not normally associated with abuse. It can, however, be associated with repeated or severe head trauma.

Colds do not cause seizures, though you could happen to have a seizure while you have a cold.

You should only take meds that are prescribed by your doctor for your condition. Sometimes epileptic seizures can be brought on by stress. In that case, epilepsy meds would be appropriate. In either case, you should see your doctor.

Surgery is only an option for someone who has a very serious form of epilepsy, so for the vast majority of people it is not an option. It could even be dangerous, as any operation on the brain can be dangerous. Someone with a minor form or epilepsy would not be considered for surgery. Many people with more serious types would not be considered for surgery either. It is really only for very severe cases.

Some brain surgery is done for serious things like removing a brain tumour. A brain tumour can cause seizures, so removing the tumour could also stop the seizures. There can also be other damage to the brain or growths on the brain, which is not a tumour but may be causing seizures. If it is safe to remove it, the person may be considered for surgery. This is a decision for a doctor or surgeon, in conjunction with the person. The medical staff would go through the options and the consequences, risks and dangers with the person before a final decision would be made.

One possibility is William's Syndrome. It is not always allied with severity in cognitive delay, but it cannot be ruled out simply for that reason. The two friends I have with the condition are considerably more positive and optimistic than many of my friends with Asperger's.

To control anything during a seizure is not really possible, so you could not consciously do it. You could wear some protection in your mouth, but that isn't very practical and you don't know when a seizure will happen. It can also be dangerous having something in your mouth when you have a seizure as you could do other damage, like to your teeth. So there is not very much that can be done to stop yourself biting your tongue when you have a seizure.

There is no known cure for epilepsy, though there are treatments that may help to control it.

For many people the cause can be found. A seizure is usually as a result of a disruption of electrical activity in the brain. There are many possible causes for that. By doing tests on an individual it can often be discovered. Sometimes it might be fairly obvious, like if someone has sustained a head injury and then starts getting seizures. In other cases it can be much more difficult to find the specific cause. Each case is different.

It is possible, simply because when one experiences a seizure, they are often convulting and their head is banging against the ground. This can lead to a series of head traumas

Please, if you are going to answer a question that the general public read, research it first. Your answer is really naive. Yes, you can get head trauma from a fall through a seizure. Sometimes a head trauma can actually be the original cause of epilepsy. Amnesia can be associated with many drugs taken to control seizures but also, after a seizure almost all patients do not remember what happened before during the post ictal phase and afterwards. Memory problems are a common issue for many epileptics on seizure medications or for people with TBI and seizures.

Edit: *** I have seizures and everytime I wake up from a Grand-Mal seizure I have no idea what happened or what happened 3 months before. Also I've hit my head on the ground and cut it open a few times from a Petite-Mal seizure and I don't know what happened. So to answer your question yes.***

Silent epilepsy is a minor form of epilepsy, in which there are no manifested convulsions and which the effects may take a very short time. Sometimes some last just seconds only, as par example during playing cards and it passes quickly that even other surrounding people may not mark or recognise it in the patient. They may very briefly lose consciousness during this very short time in which no external manifestations found and after which the patient returns to his normal conditions without medical interference. To the person it may be as if they were momentarily day dreaming and then come back again.

There are actually six types of seizures.

1. Grand Mal - Unconsciousness, convulsions, muscle rigidity

2. Absence - Brief loss of consciousness

3. Myoclonic - Sporadic jerking movements

4. Clonic - Repetitive jerking movements

5. Tonic - Muscle stiffness and rigidity

6. Atonic - Loss of muscle tone

Epilepsy is not "spread". It is not contagious, it is not infectious. You cannot catch it from another person. It is a physical condition. So like you cannot catch a broken arm from someone, you cannot catch epilepsy from someone. There are many causes and forms of epilepsy. It is not a single condition, but a catch-all term for anyone that has recurring seizures. There are various reasons people have seizures. About the only way a person can get it from someone else is if a condition that causes seizures is passed on genetically. So people in the same family can sometimes get seizures, but as most cases of epilepsy are not genetic, then usually one person a family having seizures will not mean that others will too.

Not being able to control your body like that getting a "shake" could be an epileptic seizure indeed, but it could also be much more ;-)

(I am not a doctor)  It's an interesting question.  I have been taking Lamictal for 10 years due to seizures and a few years ago a blood test showed a low potassium level.  They put me on Potassium Chloride for a bit and things seemed to level off after a few months.  I'm not an expert on potassium levels or why they rise or fall, but Lamictal may have altered mine for a time.  Best Wishes.

Yes they did call people with epilepsy possessed with demon. As we must know that medicine had not advanced as today. And as they could not give a good explanation, the easiest would be devil possessed. The above answer is incorrect. There was distinctions made between people that were sick and demonic possessed. There was also distinctions made between those that were lunatic and demon possessed.

You should go to the ER if you have a seizure and have 1) high fever (esp. for children), 2)head injury, 3)heart disease, 4) toxemia in pregnancy 5)chance you have meningitis 6) severe heat stroke 7) drug overdose.

When seizures are prolonged or happen one after another for a long period, 15 minutes to 30 minutes, medical attention should be sought by the people who are with the person having the seizures.
