How many Planets are there?

There are 8 major planets, and 5 dwarf planets, in our solar system. There are also about a half dozen bodies that may be dwarf planets, though this status has not yet been confirmed. and more than a hundred more that may be considered in the future.

Outside of our Solar System, there are billions. These are called exoplanets.
In addition to the eight planets in our solar system, due to new equipment and new techniques, new planets are being found in other solar systems every week.

Where are expo-planets located?

exoplanets can be located orbiting any star. there are not any imparticuler stars that have more or less chance of a star system. today we have found well over 200 exoplanets.

Is there alien species on other planets?

It is very unlikely that Earth is the only place with life in the Universe, but we have yet to find any proof of extraterrestrial life at this time, also there has been a new Goldilocks planet just like ours which could be possible of holding life

Because they have been observed.

Not only by indirect means but also by optical means - when a planet moves across the front of a star.

How many solar systems have exoplanets?

It is too premature to give percentages. Several hundred planets have already been found around other solar systems; but so far, mostly giant planets have been found, most of them larger than Jupiter.

How long will it take to reach the planet Kepler from Earth?

It will take 200 years to reach the planet kepler from Earth because it is 200 lightyears away.

(On the other hand, if you travel at a more leisurely 10 million miles per hour,

you'll have to set aside a little over 13,000 years for that trip.)

What is the farthest planet from Earth scientists have found?

The furthest planets from Earth are Exoplanets (or extrasolar planets), which are outside our solar system and are in orbit around other local stars. So far, over 500 have been detected. The furthest confirmed exoplanet so far is MOA-2008-BLG-310L, which is over 20,000 light years away. No doubt there are exoplanets in orbit among much further stars, even in those of other galaxies. Trying to identify them is a huge challenge though, due to the distances involved.

NASA calls them "free floating planets", and suspects that there may be more of them than there are stars!

Science fiction writers have often used the term "rogue planets".

How many extrasolar planets have been discovered?

As of 27 April 2010, 453 planets have been discovered. All of them lie in the Milky Way. Exoplanets (Extrasolar) are those planets that orbit a star other than our own Sun.

Likely? trillions upon trillions upon trillions upon ... you get the idea.

See related link for up to date information of what has been detected.

Chronological update:

13th May 2010, there are 453 known exoplanets.

6th December 2010 there are 506 known exoplanets.

Were radio waves used to try and cotact aliens?

There's no need to "try". We've been radiating radio and TV out into the galaxy at

thousands of different frequencies for a little over a hundred years now, announcing

to anybody that's listening that we are here.

It's estimated that there are roughly 500 G-type stars ... the same type as our sun,

and the type thought to have the best chance of life somewhere in its planetary

system ... within 100 light years of us. So if there's anybody on any planets around any

of those stars, our radio transmissions have reached them by now, and they may be

sitting up nights in their observatories watching "I Love Lucy" through their radio

telescopes. The mind boggles!

Why is it difficult to find evidence if there is life on other planets?

It is difficult to get to the planets to observe them closely. Much of life (bacteria) would only be observable under a microscope, and even the largest living beings known on Earth wouldn't be observable from a telescope from Earth, for example.

Which planet does not have canals on it?

No planet except earth has canals.

There was at one time an idea the Mars had "canals" which might indicate a civilization there. However this was due to a combination of mistranslation and mistaken observations. The mistranslation happened when a paper by an Italian astronomer on his observations of Mars was translated to English: the italian word "canali" (meaning channels, gullies, or canals) was translated as "canals" with the implication that they were artificial when all the Italian astronomer had meant was he had seen straight lines on Mars. The mistaken observations were eventually traced to an optical illusion where the human visual system has a strong tendency to find patterns in "random images" that are not actually there.

When was Venus disvovered and by whom?

Uggghhh the Caveman discovered the planet Venus in the year 200,000 BC. His mate, named Venus (the name would later be passed down to the much later Romans) was the most beautiful woman in his society, and he thought that this bright thing was the most beautiful thing in the sky, so he named it after her.

No, seriously, the planet Venus has been known since antiquity. It has only been in the last 600 years or so that we have realized that Venus is a planet not entirely unlike our own Earth.

What planet is the most to be livable besides earth?

Scientists believe that Mars used to be a lively planet, and may also be able to be re-constructed to support life. I'd say that Mars for now is the only other livable planet, Jupiter maybe if the gases within the planet were not present but besides that its just Mars.

Can a planet shine by its own?

An object requires a source of energy to shine. The Earth does not.

Pictures of the Earth are always taken with the reflection of the Suns energy - similar to how you see the Moon.

Are there 50 hours in a day?

No. There are 24 hours in a day.

On Earth, that is pretty standard, but there could be other planets with a 50 hour day. Here are the approximate day lengths (defining a day by the time it takes a planet to rotate once on its axis) for the rest of the planets in the Solar System:

Mercury: 58 Earth days

Venus: 243 Earth days

Mars: 25 hours

Jupiter: 10 hours

Saturn: 11 hours

Uranus: 17 hours

Neptune: 16 hours

Unfortunately nothing in our own Solar System comes close, but we are always finding new planets and we might find one that has a 50 hour day someday.
