I have to disagree I've never lost my spouse after being trapped in the spire... but i'd wager that extra funds 4 them probably helped that allot.
I kept my spouse. Relationship status needs to be very happy, and you have them follow you to the dock where you get on the ship. Don't dismiss them just get on the ship. Your spouse will say good bye, and be waiting for you in you at your home when you get back.
Visit them right away if you don't want to get divorced right after the mission.

Well in the beginning of the game you find him with you sister, but, if you want to find him after you've grown up, you have to go to Bowerstone Market. If you come from the front entrance, go straight and cross the bridge, and either on you left or right will be a way under the bridge. After you are under the bridge, you will find Murgo next to the water on the far side of the docks that are under the bridge. Or, you can simply jump off the bridge and swim up to him which is easier.
