If you actually watch the show, you'll notice that the writers display no intolerance to the beliefs of others. They make jokes about every religion, but it's all in good fun. They don't denigrate or disparage or ridicule religious beliefs. They just make fun of them, the same way they make fun of politicians, celebrities, current events, historical figures, movies, other TV shows and everything else.

Why should religious beliefs be exempt from parody and satire? Religion is a major part of our culture, so naturally many comedians -- certainly not just the Family Guy writers -- find it to be an endless source for jokes. Making fun of religion is nothing new. Almost all comedians make fun of religion, at least sometimes.

Making fun of something does not necessarily equate to denigrating, disparaging or ridiculing it. Good friends make fun of, or "rip on" each other all the time, and they don't mean anything malicious by it.

Comedians are no different. Making fun of something doesn't have to be malicious or hateful. They're jokes. They're intended to make people laugh. Humor is a way of pointing out the ironies, inconsistencies and oddities of the world we live in, and of challenging our assumptions about the things we take for granted.

Humans are innately fallible, so everything we do and say and think and feel is fraught with irony, inconsistency and odd assumptions. That includes religion, as God and religion are man-made concepts. As with everything else in this world, there are aspects of religion that are good, bad and just plain strange.

When the writers of Family Guy and other comedy writers make religious jokes, they are merely pointing out those aspects of religion which, from an objective point of view, are ironic, inconsistent, erroneous or odd.

For example, the joke where God is in bed with his girlfriend in Heaven, and he's trying to persuade her to not use a condom. It's pointing out how, although God supposedly made man "in His image," God is not supposed to have the needs and desires that humans have. God doesn't sleep, eat or have sex.

This joke is highlighting the irony and inconsistency of this belief. The image of God in bed with his girlfriend, trying to persuade her to not use condoms, is so utterly contrary to our assumptions of God, that it's funny. It's funny, not just because God is shown to be human, but because he's shown to be a human living in the modern age and acting the same way that many modern human men act.

No one's beliefs are being denigrated and ridiculed here; the joke is simply poking gentle fun at our assumptions of what God must be like. There's no implication that these assumptions are stupid or wrong. It's just funny to think of God living up in heaven like a modern bachelor.

Like they say, you have to be able to laugh at yourself. There is no topic that is taboo in comedy. Family Guy makes fun of religion for the same reason other comedians and comedy writers do: because it exists.

Actually watching the show, it would seem though they play up to their audience they aren't displaying intolerance towards religion or God, they truly do hold seem to hold a grudge against religious views and other matters concerning race, gender, and so on. It would seem the show is a way for the writers to vent frustration they may have built up on any issues of Jesus and other topics mention.
