Who won 2006 olympic women's figure skating gold medal?
Sasha Cohen of the United States. She had been a favorite to win, and had a slim lead after the short program, but Sasha is notorious for never being able to skate a clean competition; she usually skates one program beautifully, and makes mistakes in the other, and she did so at the 2006 Olympics. She and Russia's Irina Slutskaya both made mistakes in their free skate, which allowed Shizuka Arakawa to come from third place to win Japan's first gold medal in women's figure skating.
What joints are used when doing an axel in figure skating?
An Axel is when you jump forward into mid-air and turn one and a half rotations in the air.You land backwards on the opposite foot you took off on.
Acceleration is change in velocity. These are vectors that have magnitude and direction. Changing either magnitude (speed) or direction will have the skater be accelerating. SO, if the skater is going at a constant speed of 2m/s in a straight line, he is not accelerating. If he is at a constant speed of 2m/s traveling in a circle (you gave the word "around"), he is accelerating. Going around in circles means there is a force constantly changing your direction. Obviously that force is coming from the skaters legs.

Is figure skating a team or individual sport?
Figure skating can be both a team sport and an individual one, but is only an indirect competition. In individual, each skater does their own performance and is graded, then compared with all others in the competition. In pairs or group, the skates in each team will conduct a performance, receiving the grade as a team and then has this compared to other teams in the competition.

You raise once leg and balance and glide on one foot. If you are right footed raise your right foot up and vice versa for left footed. Straighten both knees, and raise your free leg (leg in the air) to at least hip height or 90 degrees. Turn your foot horizontal to the ice, point your foot, and hold leg in that position for as long as intended or desired.

What kind of physical body should you have for figure skating?
I am a figure skater myself and i have seen all different sizes of figure skaters on the ice! It doesnt matter what kind of body shape u have or size! Lets be honest it would be harder for a larger size person or a taller person to get themselves off the ice and into the air in many jumps such as ( Axel, Double sow, Double toe, Double loop, Double flip, Double axel, and tripple jumps). Most of the girls i see skating are small and short but there is some taller girls and larger girls aswell. I think no matter the shape size and Height of your body, i think if u keep your mind set on your goal (eg. landing a jump/ learning a spin) you can accomplish anything! That go's for all sports and activities!
Hope this helped :-)

What are the oldest pair of hockey skates made of?
The oldest pair of (ice) skates known date back to about 3000 B.C., found at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland. The skates were made from the leg bones of large animals, holes were bored at each end of the bone and leather straps were used to tie the skates on. An old Dutch word for skate is "schenkel" which means "leg bone".
By the time a reasonable precursor of hockey came along (originally known as Ijscolf, or Colf on ice), the skates were handcrafted by blacksmiths from iron and/or steel. No two pair were alike as the craftsmen used patterns of their own design. Essentially, the skates consisted of blades of iron and/or steel embedded into blocks of wood which were in turn strapped to the skaters boots with either leather or rope fittings.
What do Speed Skaters wear when skating?
There are many different thigs that you can wear.
If you are indoors, you obviously don't want to be wearing a winter jacket, because you would be way too hot. But if you are outside and in the cold, you probably want to wear more layers, but also things that aren't going to make you the most un-aerodynamic thing out there. If you wear a sin suit, like most skaters do, I personally wear a warm, long sleeve shirt and then the suit over top (when I'm outside) But when I'm inside, i simply wear compression shorts and my skin suit.
And then you have to wear skates and a helmet and all that too.
