Skating on a pond does not sound very safe. The wheels will slide on the ice and you will fall. Try skate boarding in a skate park or on the side walk. Also wear a safety helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and all that good stuff. It will protect you if youI fall. If you SKATE on a pond make shore that the ice is very very thick! My foot has fallen in ice cold water befor :S not fun.

If you are good at roller skating are you good at ice skating?
Not necessarily, though you may have a bit of an advantage in learning over someone who's never skated at all. One of the big issues is the same as that between roller skating and roller blading: skates automatically remain vertical; blades want to tip over to the side.
Difference of speed skates and figure skates?
The recreational skate is not designed for the speeds that the figure skate is. It is a "crossover" between the figure skate and the hockey skate. It is not designed to be as precise in turnings and stops as the figure skate. However, if you do not wish to invest in figure skates for the novice (just in case it's another whim) recreational skates are a good option. The novice learns to skate and has fun without the expense of the professional skate.

The oldest pair of skates known date back to about 3000 B.C., found at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland. The skates were made from the leg bones of large animals, holes were bored at each end of the bone and leather straps were used to tie the skates on. An old Dutch word for skate is "schenkel" which means "leg bone".
Around the 14th Century, the Dutch started using wooden platform skates with flat iron bottom runners. The skates were attached to the skater's shoes with leather straps. Poles were used to propel the skater. Around 1500, the Dutch added a narrow metal double edged blade, making the poles a thing of the past, as the skater could now push and glide with his feet (called the "Dutch Roll"). In 1848, E. V. Bushnell of Philadelphia, PA invented the first all steel clamp for skates.

Dose it hurt to fall when you are ice skating?
It depends on how you fall. Sometimes it just hurts a little, then you get up and continue skating, other times, depending on how you fall, you can hurt your wrists trying to catch yourself, or twist your ankle or knee. Most the time, if you don't try to go too fast or do things your not yet use to, like turning around fast, skating fast...you will be alright. Don't be afraid to try something new, you may end up being very good at it...just take it slow at first. Even if you do fall, take a quick break and when you're ready, be sure to get back at it!

A figure skater will maintain approximately the same angular momentum during their spin (minus a negligible amount due to the friction of their skates and wind resistance). When they move their arms in, they will reduce their rotational inertia by reducing the distance of the mass of her arms and hands from the axis of rotation. Its called the angular conservation of energy. No matter what the skater's position the skater produces a certain amount of energy per second. When his / her hands are extended the distance of the rotation is larger. When he pulls his hands in the weight is unchanged. TO keep the energy at the same amount the difference has to be made up by increasing the number of spins per time unit.

I dont know what kind of boots your talkig about, I mean for what sport? Speed skating boots range from 300-1500 CAN dollars, Hockey skates can be from about the same but maybe a bit less. But if you join a club you can most-likely rent them for much less.
