Well fire alarm systems need to be inspected by licensed and certified alarm service companies, they need to have NFPA certification. This is due to the legalities of a fire alarm system and coverage granted by the insurance companies for building insurance. This isn't something John Q building owner can do to save a few bucks, it needs to be done once a year and it must be done by a certified alarm company. Without and inspection the insurance company can void your building insurance any time they like (you don't want to have to file a claim and find out they are not going to cover your claim).

It depends upon local codes and how the building is being used. For example, many state fire codes allow individually placed, battery-operated smoke alarms that need not be wired to anything, let alone connected together, for one and two-family dwellings.

Well usually the smoke will suffocate you first, but it's a totally different story if you catch on fire. The heat itself won't kill you because the smoke or fire will get to you before any heatstroke/heat exhaustion comes along.

Two thoughts: you may have put the battery in wrong (if it's not all the way in, they chirp) or you may have put in a dead battery.

Yes. Steam can and will set off smoke detectors. Happened to me recently and have been charged 600 for fire a brigade false alarm call out fee. Steam came from bathroom as I didn't have exhaust fan on. So if you want to have the most expensive shower of your life let some steam wander out of bathroom and activate alarm.
