How can you check to see if the victim is receiving your two rescue breaths?
As you administer each rescue breath look at their chest as you breathe in. You should see the chest rise if properly done. Remember to do a head-tilt-chin-lift if you do not suspect a head, neck or spinal injury and firmly pinch the nose closed. Breathe in only enough air to make the chest start to rise. If you breathe in too much it can cause air to go into the stomach resulting in vomiting.
Depending on the type of fracture, I would suggest some minor nerve damage in your wrist. How did the fractures occur? If it was a fall, you may have some awkward pressure or nerve damage to the spine or neck.
To ensure thatit isn't anything to do with your spine, have someone hold your hands. Squeeze their hands as hard as you can at the same time. If they say the pressure is different, it may be a problem with your spinal cord.
To double check, lay down. Have the person put their hands on the bottom of your feet. Push as hard as you can against their hands at the same time, then have them move their hands to on top of your feet. Pull as hard as you can against their hands. If the pressure is different, then it would probably be that.
I doubt it would be to do with your clavicle fracture. Then again, this could be unnecessary info overload. Are you taking pain killers? If so, look to see if there is any side-effects, especially with any regular medications you may be taking already. Is the sensation in both hands or just one?
Hope this helps. :D Please don't run the aforesaid resistance test until the clavicle is back in one piece. Yikes.
What happens in hospital when someone arrests?
A cardiac arrest team will be called in, and the staff will start CPR immediately, they will use a BVM and Defib (if necessary) to attempt to resus the patient the cardiac arrest team will then move in and perform ALS on the patient.
Usually the patient will go into respiratory arrest and then cardiac arrest, their heart rhythm will normally go from normal synas rhythm into VF (Ventiricualr Fibrillation) where a shock will be nececerry to stop the heart, and shock it back into normal rhythem.
If the patient receives early CPR and early Defib they have a fairly good chance of surviving if they go into VF.
Hope this helps.
What are considered to be signs of life?
Checking the signs of life, what would you look for is:
1. Look to see if the chest is rising and falling
2. Listen for breaths from the mouth and nose
3. Feel on your cheeks respiration's from the mouth and nose
If these are absent, there are no signs of life; check them for 10 seconds and if absent, immediately start CPR.
Could you explain the use of back slaps and abdominal thrusts in a choking scenario?
If a person is choking and has a serious obstruction in the airway call for an ambulance immediately.
If a person is choking but still conscious:
* Support the persons chest and lean them forwards (to allow gravity to help) and give five back slaps.
* This should be done with the heel of your hand, between the shoulder blades and they should be sharp slaps in order to dislodge the piece of food/object they are choking on. * If the obstruction is not cleared after 5 back slaps, then give 5 abdominal thrusts. * This should be done by standing behind the person and placing a fist in the upper part of the abdomen (between the breastbone and the navel). Then hold your fist with the other hand. * Lean the choking person forward * Then pull sharply inwards and upwards * Repeat this five times * If the obstruction is still not cleared give 5 more back slaps and continue to alternate between backslaps and abdominal thrusts until obstruction is cleared or they become unconscious. If the person becomes unconscious at any time, gently lower them to the ground and commence CPR.

What if you get graphite in your hand?
Graphite is pretty much like any other spinter. Wash the area with soap and water and let an adult check it. Don't pick at it; you'll irritate it more. When home, wet a folded washcloth with hot water (a compress)--as hot as you can stand holding in your hand. Lay it on the area for 15 minutes, turning it over to a hotter cloth as needed. Repeat using the cloth over a few days. Put an antibacterial ointment on it and cover with a bandaid. The piece should work it's way out, but like a splinter, it will likely get a small infection first. Keep using the warm compress 2 to 3 times every day and re-apply the ointment. Note: Millions of adults who were once children accidentally poked themselves with pencil led. We all still have 2 hands and 10 fingers. Splinters / graphite splinters hurt, but typically are not serious injuries.

What is best for swelling heat or cold?
If the swelling is due to trauma such as a punch to the jaw, ice is best. If swelling is inside the mouth, an abscess is the most likely cause and heat is best as it draws the pus to the surface where it will burst and the relief will be instant.

What are the things you have to store in a first aid box?
I have a first aid bag and inside that I have:
Bandages
Scissors
Antiseptic wipes
Plasters of various sizes
Cotton pads
Small sticky tape for cotton pads
Antiseptic cream/gel
This is what I can remember that I have and for different circumstanses you need special equipment (like insect repelant). For a first aid box there will probably be more of each item plus a few extra things.
