Step by step suggestions...

1. Read up on this via a few sportfishing magazines. Like Big Game, Marlin Mag., Pacific Coast Sportfishing. And a book about fishing like one form Zane Gray may fill you in on the adventure and sport with its' Catch and Release ethos where you play "tag" with the fish as a sportsman just there for a chance to experience the grandeur of these big beautiful fish.

2. Join a big game fishing organization of some sort. IGFA or a local fishing club or both would be better. Then when you attend the meetings you will see the gentlemen anglers and hear some of the fishing stories. Maybe even get an invite to go along on an adventure.

3. Book travel to some marlin rich destination and hire a good captain to take you fishing. Nothing makes a fisherman wiser than the experience. Be sure to book your travel at the right time of year to miss Typhoons or Hurricanes but hook up with the best marlin bite. (ie. Cabo or East Cape in Baja California MX)

4. If you have a boat or plan on getting one... Then seek out a little help from a big game tackle shop. Some are better than others. Some are full of "We Know It All" bravado but no matter it is still wise to visit the other tackle stores in your area.

5. If you are in Hawaii, Australia or some other area where you fight 500 to 1,000 pounders you will need very heavy gear. If you are not then you can get buy with 30# to 50# gear. Sometimes for strippers and such talented fishermen with patience and a good boat driver you can catch marlin on light line. (ie. 20, 12 or 8 lb line )

After you see a few marlin up close and personal you will appreciate how these beautiful fish are like the lions on the African savanna. Kings in the sea. A wonder to behold and an extremely exciting moment to pull on one while they leap.

Jerk bait is a bait or lure that shudders under the water to atract fish.

Sorry, you're wrong. 'Jerk bait' is actually a method of fishing (for predators, usually pike or similar) which utilises a short stiff rod and artificial lres known as jerk-baits. Action / movement is imparted to the lures by alternatly jerking the rod tip and winding the reel, which causes the bait (often quite large and garish) to dart forwards / side to side / up and down in an erratic manner that is attractive to the fish, causing them to attck the bait.

When trying to catch minnows you need to bait them in just like you would use the minnow to bait a larger fish. They love to eat bread. I usually use a bagel because it holds together better than just a slice of bread, and I most commonly use dry dog food pellets which seem to attract the minnows a little more than the bread. Other minnow trappers use cat food pellets as well but I have found them to be too small and they don't stay in the trap as well as the larger dog food pellets. I just throw a handful of it into the trap when it is open, put the two ends together and clip it with the clip provided, tie a rope to the eyelet on the hook and throw it into a lake, pond, or stream. I let it go to the bottom, some trappers suspend it with floats or if they are trapping below the ice they only let out a certain amount of rope, but anywhere under or in the water will suffice. After it sits awhile, usually overnight you can pull it in open it, rebait it and use or sell the minnows

It all depends on the lake, fish might go for worms in one lake, but then power bait in another. Asking around the lake you want to fish at will help. The type of fish will also matter in your choice of bait. Trout usually go for worms or power bait, striped bass and some tomes catfish usually go for anchovies or liver.

Generally the line rating (pounds test) is only part of the factor in landing fish. Generally speaking the following factors come into play when trying to land a fish:

- The rod length and strength; A longer rod absorbs more of the energy from the fishes weight and the power of the runs a fish makes. The strength of a rod refers to the stiffness of the rod and its ability to handle fish.

- Reel; the reel component is used to reel in the fish and has to be appropriate for the size of the fish you are targeting. Part of fishing is knowing how to play the fish. When the fish has lots of energy you need to let it run and get tired so you let it take line by setting the drag suitable. You hold your rod at a high angle to allow the rod to take the brunt of the strong pulls and head shakes. Once the fish tires you can begin taking in line by using the cranking power of the reel, the absorption power and strength of the rod and the strength of the line.
