To transform a shower from dull to dramatic, tile a shower wall. Here's how to do it:

Step 1: Measure the walls carefully; shower walls are seldom perfectly square and plumb. Do a dry layout of the tile (including spacers) on the floor using your measurements.

Step 2: Working in a small section, spread thinset with a notched trowel and press the tile into place.

Step 3: When the tile has set - typically about 24 hours - you can apply the grout. Mix grout in small batches that you will be able to use within 20 to 30 minutes.

Step 4: Wait 24 hours and apply sealer to all the joints - and the tile if recommended. Natural stone and some other tiles will need a sealer to keep them from absorbing water. Gazed porcelain and ceramic tiles are already sealed.

There are many factors to consider when a tile installation is priced for a client; what is the substrate? how is it prepared? what else needs to be done to the surface to insure a proper installation? what kind of tile is being used and is it the right kind of tile for the area? what type of thinset and grout will be used based on the application and other materials? The National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) is the trade association for installation professionals. There is a list of installers throughout the country under "find a contractor." These professionals understand industry standards. They have a Standards and Methods Committee which writes those standards for tile installation in the United States and tile and product manufacturers prefer that these skilled professionals install their products to guarantee a quality installation.

Also consider an NTCA 5-Star Contractor - these contractors use CTEF Certified Installers who are trained and tested to industry standards and have met several other criteria including recommendations from owners. The NTCA 5-Star Contractors have gone above the industry standards to earn this designation.

A vaccuum with a soft brush is the best thing to clean laminates with. If they need a washing, use simple hot water to damp mop. Be careful not to soak the floor. There are cleaners available for laminates, but most manufacturers recommend the hot water instead, due to resdue issues.

The modulus of rupture or bending strength of ceramic vitrified tiles can be increased by incorporation of inorganic mineral fibrous material-quarry waste in form of flaky & elongated small pieces of the size 1 to 3 mm or more upto 5 mm. Laminate floors are manufactured, a thin layer of wood or Formica is glued to a backer. The surface is only about 1/16th of an inch thick and the whole board is about 3/8 inch thick.

Hardwood floors are all wood and 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick. Oak is the most common but there are many different types of wood available. They can be sanded and refinished several times over a long period of time. Laminate can not be sanded and had a hard factory coating that resists staining more than hardwood.

July 31/11 - Hi, I have been using vinegar all my life on tiles and especially wooden floors. Get about 1/3 bucket of hot water and put about 1/4 cup of white vinegar. Take a clean mop or rag (if you wash on your knees), and mop that floor. It will shine like a mirror. I have parquet floors and I constantly get compliments. This method also works on tiles, counters, mirrors, glass, anything that needs cleaning, even wooden furniture but make sure to use a clean dry cloth to wipe of all remnants of vinegar and water on the furniture. PS: If you have a piece of clothing that you don't know if the color will run in your wash, put pure vinegar in a bucket and soak that piece completely. I'm sorry but yards can not be converted to square feet (or square anything). A yard is a distance and a square foot is an area. Square yards can be converted to square feet however by multiplying by 9.

So you need 5,000 tiles available if starting out to cover 5,000 square feet.

As someone who had vinyl flooring in the past, this is my answer. When you have children, it is so much easier to clean up red Kool-Aid off of vinyl than carpet or hardwood or some other type of flooring.It is easier to clean, and cheaper than other options.
