The size of each group in the food pyramid represents how much of that type of food should be included in a healthy diet as compared to the other types. You should eat more grains than proteins or fats so the grain section is larger.

Why is food pyramid triangular in shape?

As we all know, triangles are thinner up the top and wider down the bottom. The foods we need to eat the most are at the bottom because there are more of them and that's where there is more space. The food we should eat least is up the top because there are less of these and the top is where there is less space. Don't forget that the foods we should eat can also be represented in a pie diagram as well. Hope this helps!

What food group is gravy in?

Although gravy can contain bits of or broth from chicken, turkey, beef, or other meat, leading to thinking that gravy belongs solely in the meat/protein food group, it likely belongs more in the bread/starch/carbohydrate group due to flour that is used to thicken the broth to make gravy.

Some 'foods' that we eat do not belong to any specific category. For example: jello, candy and gravy do not belong to any one category. The gravy my family fixes includes flour, milk and oil. So, that's part of three different food categories. Grain, dairy and fats/oil.

What does the food group's size in the pyramid indicate?

How much of your daily food intake should be from that section of the pyramid. The bigger sections mean that you should eat more of that type of food. The smaller sections mean that you should eat less of that type of food.
