Failing to find a passage to the Atlantic he turned and touched near the Golden Gate. He didn't sight land for 64 days until he made for Pelew Islands. After refitting in Java he headed for the Cape of Good Hope and arrived in England Sept. 26, 1580.The queen wasn't too sure how to receive Drake, but she paid a visit to his ship and knighted him. In the fall of 1585 he sailed 25 ships against the Spanish Indies and brought home 190 Virginian colonists with tobacco and potatoes. Early in 1587 he went to Cadiz and destroyed 33 ships and to the Azores capturing a Portuguese carack worth 100,000 pounds. He fought the Spanish Armada as part of the Eng. fleet in 1588. The next Spring he and Sir John Norrey's sailed for Spain and Portugal. They didn't accomplish much beyond inflicting damage to Spanish shipping. He will die of dysentery in Porto Bella in 1596.
