On land, geese eat grasses, marsh grass, berries and seeds. In water, they eat pond plants, tubers, roots and algae. They also feed on crops like clover, alfalfa, wheat, rye, corn, barley, oats and grain left in farmers' fields after the harvest.
So, when their food supply dwindles in the fall, they move further south to warmer areas, where the food is still readily available.

However, many flocks of geese now stay in colder climates and subsist on handouts from humans who feed them throughout the winter months. I have seen geese in MN in February, with several inches of snow on the ground, and ice on all the lakes. So their migration patterns are not a good indication of when winter will arrive...it may already be here, and the geese have not yet migrated.
