Genetically Modified Food

GM Foods are genetically modified to have more appealing properties or to be more practical. Some traits that are modified are resistance to insects and disease while growing, delayed ripening, better color, or larger growth. While this is good for businesses, the practice is highly controversial within some circles. There are health and safety concerns surrounding these foods.

Why not ban genetically modified food?

That is exactly what some people want to do; however, the issues surrounding the use of GMO foods are vast and banning them is not likely. Some claim GMO food is necessary in order to "feed the world."

GMOs are guaranteed not to be found in which type of food?

There are no foods that contain corn, soy, canola, papayas, or any foods that are known to have been genetically modified that can be guaranteed NOT to contain any GMOs, not even foods labeled "100% organic" or foods on the Non-GMO Project's list of non-GMO foods. This is due to GMO varieties cross-pollinating with organically grown crops, which has resulted in the possibility, if not probability of organically grown foods having small amounts of GMOs in them. The foods on the Non-GMO Project list can actually contain up to 0.9% GMOs (as stated on the Non-GMO Project's website).

What is the price of genetically modified food?

The cost of GMO foods purchased in grocery stores is not known because what foods are GMO are which are not are not labeled. There are also many factors that affect food prices, so it is difficult to know how GMO ingredients in foods affects price.

Are genetically modified food in Saudi Arabia?

In the 2000 it was ban but since March 2005 is acepted but only if it is labelled

Is genetically modified food cheaper than raising animals?

You cannot compare raising crops with raising animals. They are two separate things, but the way animals are raised today is most likely cheaper than raising animals the way small farmers raise them. On a small farm, animals have fields they can graze, are not usually given any hormones, and the use of antibiotics is rare, but in what is called "factory farms" animals are raised in buildings under very crowded conditions. Many of these animals are given hormones or are genetically modified to grow faster, and are given antibiotics to ward of disease. It is likely that using the factory farm method is cheaper than allowing them room to graze and not using hormones to cause them to produce more or to grow faster.

Are kosher foods GMO free?

Kosher foods aren't specifically gmo free.

What genetically modified food animal is waiting for approval from the FDA?

Genetically modified salmon, called AguaAdvantage salmon, is waiting for approval from the FDA. (May 2014)

What year were GMO foods available?

GMO soy was the first commercially planted genetically modified crop. It was first planted in 1996. Before that, the Flavor Saver tomato was sold, but consumers did not accept the quality. There was also a GMO potato, but it did not pass the scientific studies. Both are not being sold any longer, and in fact, the potato was never on the market.

Does genetically modified food grow more bacteria than organic food?

yes. but not true always this again depend upon how is this food modified genetealy

Are pastas GMO free and do you use genetically modified organisms in making your foods?

There is really no way to know what processed foods are GMO free, especially since 70& or more of the processed foods in grocery stores have GMO ingredients. Since pasta is most often made with wheat flour and GMO wheat is not yet grown commercially for sale to consumers, it is possible that it does not contain GMOs, but that cannot be guaranteed. If you use processed foods, it is likely that you are consuming GMOs unless they are labeled 100% organic. Even then, the food may not be totally free of GMOs due to cross pollination of organic crops by GMO crops.

Is white and yellow mixed fresh corn genetically modified?

There is no way to know without having the corn tested for GMOs. Due to cross pollination of GMO corn with non-GMO corn, it is likely that any corn may have GMOs in it.

Could genetically modified crops that are resistent to insects cause some insects to die off creating an ecobalance imbalance interbalance in the intersystem malsystemecosystem?

It could happen and some believe non-targeted insects are already dying due to Bt (genetically modified to produce an insecticide in the plant itself).

Which US state was the first to pass legislation requiring the labeling of Genetically Modified foods?

Yesterday, Conneticut became the first US State to legalise the labelling of Genetically Modified foods, and this legislation is accompanied by an unusual requirement that four other states enforce similar legislation.

When were GM foods invented?

  • The first genetically modified food was created in the United States in 1983 which was a tobacco plant resistant to antibiotics.then ten years later the U.S. came out with slower ripening tomatoes. Then the U.K. came out with ripened tomato paste

Are foods made from genetically modified crops required to pass human testing?

The FDA classified genetically modified foods as "substantially equivalent" to non-GMO foods. They do not have to pass human testing prior to being produced and sold to consumers or at any other time.

Is GMO food growing pharmaceutical?

Growing GMO foods is not growing pharmaceuticals, though genetic engineering is used in both foods and pharmaceuticals. Genetically engineered hormones are also used in factory farmed animals grown for food.

What are the avantages and disadvantages of gm food?

Genetically modified(gm) food is advantageous because the crops can be made to produce their own pesticides, grow larger amounts of food product per acre, or otherwise be advanced. On the downside, the modifications that have been spliced into the genes rarely stay for more than a single generation. Farmers can not save seed for the next year and must pay the owner of the genetic pattern for every crop's seeds. An additional point against gm food lies in fears, often considered unfounded due to FDA regulations, that declare gm food to affect people differently because of the unnatural alterations.

Does Brazil Label its GMO foods and is there any source for this information so it can be used in an essay?

Yes, GMO foods are labeled in Brazil. For a list of countries that label GMO foods, visit this link: http://justlabelit.org/right-to-know/labeling-around-the-world/

What are the benefits of GMO production?

One benefit of GMO production was said to be that less herbicides would be used on them. This; however, has not proved to be the case after they were used for several years. After years of using them, it appears that the use of glyphosate has doubled due to the use of glyphosate resistant crops.

What is the difference between GM and organic foods?

The difference between organic and genetically modified food is like the difference between night and day. GMO food is of unknown effect when consumed by the body, and it is presumed to be dangerous. Organic food is as natural as food gets, with no pesticides or any genetically modified organisms. Organic food tends to taste a lot better than GM food.

What are technical issues with genetically modified food excluding health issues?

Possible issues of genetically modified food, excluding health issues are:

  • Removing a gene from one species and inserting it into another species (referred to as horizontal breeding) could have unknown consequences when released into the environment.
  • The modification used to produce the desired trait could be passed to other organisms unintentionally. There is evidence that weeds are becoming more and more resistant to herbicides used on crops that have been modified, which may be a result of the gene being passed from the crop to the weeds.
  • Unintended changes to the plant itself could occur using the technology that is available at this point in time.
  • Unintended effects of organisms in the soil, possibly as a result of the modification and possibly as a result of the pesticides being used on the crops.
  • Greater pollution of the environment due to more pesticides being used, including development of plants that are resistant to different herbicides as those that are already being used become less effective.
  • The unintentional killing of beneficial insects through the use of crops that are modified to produce a substance that kills insects when they eat the plants.
  • Control of the world's food supply in the hands of companies that develop and patent the modified foods is not beyond the realm of possibilities.
  • Contamination of organic and non GMO crops through cross-pollination, eventually resulting in all varieties of a species containing GMOs.
  • Foods that do not contain GMOs could become extinct for the reason above.

What will it take for all the Food Companies to start labeling all their Genetically Modified Organisms?

It would take good evidence that GMO foods differ from their natural counterparts in terms of safety or nutrition. The best evidence available currently suggests that GMO foods are equivalent to natural foods in these terms. The food is therefore unlabeled, because the information a label would convey is irrelevant as far as consumer choice goes.

That's the science end of it anyway. I can't speak much to the legal end.
