The GSD's original role was to herd sheep but they are now a companion dog and police/army dog and a guide for the blind as well as many other roles.

The German Shepherd dog was developed from prick eared European herding and farm dogs in the late 1800s. During 1899 a German dog fancier and cavalry officer, Captain Max Von Stephanitz, purchased a herding dog named Hektor Linksrhein that greatly impressed him. He brought the dog to his vast Estate in Grafath Germany. Von Stephanitz subsequently renamed the dog Horand v Grafrath. On April 22, 1899 Von Stephanitz, Adolf Meyer, Ernst Von Otto and others, formed the Verein fur Deutsche Schaferhunde (SV) in Germany. The translation of this name is roughly, "The German Shepherd Dog Club of Germany". The SV started a registration book and Harand v Grafrath became the first registered German Shepherd Dog. On Sept. 20, 1899, the SV adopted a breed standard based on the proposals of Meyer and Von Stephanitz and later held its first specialty show at Frankfurt-am-Main, using the titles Sieger and Siegerin. The development of the German Shepherd Dog had begun.

They could, but it would be considered a disqualifying fault and such a dog would not be permitted in the show ring. German Shepherds are supposed to have only dark brown eyes.

NO!! It all depends on the socialization on how well you introduce him to people, animals and the postman ect ect... They are protective, not temperamental!

However often you feed it... I feed once a day for a healthy dog, twice for unhealthy, and three times for a puppy

The scientific name for the German Shepherd, as with all domestic dogs, is Canis lupus familiaris. The German Shepherd as a breed does not have a specifically different name.

While dogs don't require daily scrub downs like we do, they do need regular baths--but just how regular depends on several factors, such as the dog's environment and type of coat.

Here are some general guidelines:

* Bathing once a month works for most dogs.

* Dogs with an oily coat, like Basset Hounds, may need bathing as frequently as once a week.

* Many short-haired breeds with smooth coats, such as Beagles and Weimaraners, do just fine with less frequent baths. Short-coated Basenjis are fastidious in their personal hygiene and rarely need a bath.

* Breeds with water-repellent coats, such as Golden Retrievers and Great Pyrenees, should be bathed less often so as to preserve their natural oils.

* Dogs with thick, double coats--such as Samoyeds, Malamutes, and other Northern breeds--do best with fewer baths and a lot of extra brushing (which gets rid of loose, dead hair and helps distribute natural oils that keep your dog's skin and coat healthy).

All dogs are descendants of the wolf. My answer is "Yes".

Of course the German Shepherd. They weigh up to 40Kg, compared to boxers weighing up to 32Kg; German Shepherds have a longer jaw with a bite force of 238psi, whereas the Boxers is 200psi; German Shepherds are more aggressive and would 9 times out of ten tear a boxer to pieces

German shepherds eat around 2-3 times a day. They're big dogs and should be fed regularly. When they're puppies you should feed them 2 times a day. Do not overfeed your German shepherd because it can cause weight problems. Always have them on a special diet. I know everything on German shepherds, but I don't own one but I will. Maybe this summer. 2-3 times daily is probably the best solution to feeding your German shepherd.

How to teach your dog tricks is easy. Don't start out as hard ones like Down, Beg, Up, Roll, and Over. Start out with some basick ones like Sit, Lay, and Bark. ll Like for Kids, they go to school. They start as Kidergarten and work their way up to inprove their work. ll It's the same with dogs. How, you say. Easy for dogs they have kidergarten too. To teach dogs tricks start out with saying Come here "Sable". Then when your dog comes, give it a treat or give it a pat and say good girl/boy. Then, say Lay Down "Sable" and if it doesn't work show it a treat or bone and then say it ones more, then if the dog still won't give it some rest for 20min. come back and try again. When you are done with Laying down, Give it a Pat ot a Treat and say Good Girl/Boy "Sable". Then you can do the same with These steps. > Kidergarten: Lay down, Sit, Bark. You shouldn't breed your female after she is seven years old, a male however... Can breed all of his life.

German shepherds are good guide dogs for a number of reasons: they are large enough and sturdy enough to be able to walk long distances with a partner; they tend to have a moderate to high pack drive, so they enjoy working for people; they are highly intelligent; and they naturally rely more on vision than on scent.

Although German shepherds are the breed most people associate with dog guides, many other breeds do this work. Labrador retrievers and Golden retrievers, which share many of the same desirable characteristics as German shepherds, are also commonly used as guide dogs

DO NOT trim or cut your dogs whiskers, PLEASE! Those are ultra-sensitive feelers that are important for their orientation. They are highly sensitive to air currents and vibration. For example, brush up against your dogs whiskers and see if you get a quick reaction!

Yes, German shepherd do make good 'pets.' But no... A better word would be they are loyal and protective 'family members'. They are loyal and protective (If you need a dog to protect children then this dog is good choice) I would trust a baby swimming in a pool with a GSD. They will stay with you through thick and thin and to me they have more personality than any other dog.

Yes, German Shepherd's can make amazing pets. My family and I purchased a pure bred GSD two years ago. Over the years he has become very protective of us. However, all dogs have their own personalities. They can be mean if they are not trained properly. Our dog in particular can be very mean, if someone comes into our house unannounced he will take a chunk out of their arm or leg or whatever he can put his teeth into. At the vets we also have to muzzle him before we enter the building. When I walk him he protects me, which comes in handy at times. But then again like I said before it all depends on the dog. Our dog was bred specially to be a guard dog. He has bitten my little brother before but any kind of dog can bite. It depends on the sex, age, breeding and training of the dog to find out if he is a suitable pet. It is also the responsibility of the owner to train him the right way. GSD's are very tough and strong, they could pull you or knock you down if they really wanted to. They are also very smart, our dog is trained to open doors, pick things up, heal on command, attack/bark on command, sit and lay down. He is very loving towards us (besides the one inccident we had when he bit my brother) and we leave our grandmother with him all the time. It may be a good idea for you to call around to breeders and ask questions about the litters mother and father. Our dog's family had been guard dogs for generations. But all in all they are very smart animals and if raised the right way they do fabulously in families!

If you bathe them regularly they don't. But if you smell their face it might smell bad do to run-off from their eyes. You can buy powder to put in their food that helps that.

rottweilers can survive in most enviorments but due to their short coats are not suited to cold conditions

He won't continue to grow in height after about one year in age. However, he may be between two and four when his chest "drops" or fully develops. Until then he'll look like a gangly, scrawny teenager.
