Normally because they have unfinished buisness with the living. Sometimes you might hire a person to 'get rid' of a ghost for you, but they still wont pass over. The only way a ghost can cross over is when they feel they have nothing else left to do here.
Why wouldn't a ghost want you to help it cross over?
A ghost can simply cross over on its own when it is ready to. He/She may still have some un finished business to do.... Let them pass at their own pace.

We classify "Spirits" as people who have died and passed over correctly. These people go to where they are supposed to whether it's heaven, home, the Other Side; whatever you call it. Spirits can come and visit us, but the difference is they always go back "home." If your grandfather comes on the foot of your bed after his death 2 days prior and tells you not to worry and that he's doing fine, then he is a "Spirit."
A "Ghost" is an individual that for whatever reason, has decided to stay in a location and NOT go to where most people go. The reasons for their lagging behind varies on the individual themselves. With female ghosts their reason is usually emotionally driven; with males it tends to be driven by possessive or controlling behavior. Ghosts can leave their locations at any time and go "home", however, most of them have made a choice to stay and consider the places they haunt as their "home". Of course there are always some ghosts that are not even aware that they have died. There are many of those as well.
But many of them are aware that they have died, and cannot "give up the ghost" so to speak.
Is there a difference between a ghost and a demon?
no, a demon is just a more powerful entity but it is still a ghost, a ghost is just an afterlife life term that we call people or creatures who have passed away and have not crossed over. Now there is a difference between a spirit and demon, spirit they can still hurt you but they are more confused and stressed then a demon, a demon hurts you out of anger, a spirit hurts you because they want you to feel their pain or they are trying to get your attention.

the first ghost rider was a western comic book about a man who fakes his death and hunts down the wicked men of the old west
the 2nd ghost rider sold his soul to the devil to save his old stunt bike mentor (who was like a father to him) from cancer (so the devil kills him in a bike accent) and with that soul he bonds a demons soul to his (zarthos if you are wandering) and he acts as a spirit of vengeance to kill the wicked, murders, gang members, other demons etc. so he was a good guy

then there is Daniel ketch who found the 2nd ones bike and got fused with the demon on accident he was about the same as the modern ghost rider but the story and Daniels attitude about it, its basically lost because he doesn't know any thing about the devil or zarthos
and there is ultimate ghost rider who is a servant of the devil so his long term girl friend wont get killed by a cult who worships the devil and his children so he was a bad guy kinda

The door thing is because your floors are slatted and may have caught a breeze while your dog or animal or just a re-action that would make a burst of air. nothing is haunting you and you are safe.

well really its your own opinion if you do you do if you don't well then i guess you don't i personally believe in ghosts because of personal expirences.Weather you do or don't its your thought.
I don't really know about that but if your friend is doing the ouiia board in any room, make sure that the tell them to leave afterwards because otherwise they might not leave and so you might get haunted. That's what happened to my room, but then afterwards it didn't leave so we had to use the board again and we had to force it to leave.

Ghosts may or may not been seen at any hour. Since some may or may not choose to believe in them. It all depends on your beliefs and such. Having said that, if there truly are gohsts, I would suspect that the one who don't want to be seen at night simply don't come out of hiding, thus why you don't see them.

Yet another possibility: Perhaps ghosts appear just as frequently during daylight, but are not noticed because of other distractions.
Not just nasty people...Sometimes spirits or "ghosts" haunt people because they have a certain connection, i.e. the home, a certain person, a certain object, etc. Sometimes the connection is never apparent, so it seems as though the spirit came from nowhere. As far as i know, ghosts can only scared a human being, but cannot directly kill them. In some horror movies, some of the ghosts look extremely frightening , which made its victim lost his/her consciousness, lead to death ( heart attack for example) or fainting, but that's only a horror element of the movie. It's also depend on the type of ghost, if a ghost came back for revenge, then it might be able to haunt its victim , drive them into insanity and finally lead to suicide.
