Glacier National Park was formed by the movement of glaciers over the landscape during the last ice age. As the glaciers moved, they carved out valleys, peaks, and other unique landforms that shape the park's terrain today. After the glaciers retreated, the park was established in 1910 to protect its natural beauty and ecosystems.

Glacier has several unique habitat zones that include megafauna that have been extirpated from much of their former ranges: wolves, grizzly bears, wolverines, elk, moose, and others. The park contains grasslands, montane forests, sub-alpine meadows and forests, Pacific Northwest forests, and alpine zones. It is the southern extent of Arctic plant & animal communities. It is also a significant geographic site located at the headwaters of drainages to the Pacific, Hudson Bay, and Gulf of Mexico. Culturally, it was a place of significance for the Blackfeet, Salish, and Kootenai tribes; the park contains spiritually significant sites. Glacier is also a place of uncommonly spectacular scenery. One visit to the park and you will understand: it is a gem even among national parks.
