Well back then it was really different from now it was only the forest it was hard living in the prairie
Wild ferrets (and European polecats) eat small rodents like mice, rats voles and rabbits. Amphibians like frogs and toads are also on the menu but probably hard to find on the prairie. A smaller part of their diet consists of small birds and insects and bird eggs. 90% of the meals of the black footed ferret consist of prairie dogs.
As long as it's not so shallow that it would completely freeze over to the bottom, I would recommend getting a type of Goldfish called Comets. They are colorful, so you can see them from above and will always forage for food, keeping mosquito larvae in check. They are sometime considered as feeder fish so they are usually inexpensive.

They are not the same at all. The only similarity is that they are both rodents. Voles have larger heads and their ears and eyes are much smaller (their eyes are barely even visible!) Their tails are an inch long or shorter, they have short legs (to keep them low to protect themselves against predators) and they have different teeth. Voles target the garden more than any other rodent, and when interested in a plant, it will most certainly be doomed. They actually chew from the ROOT of the plant, so it will not recover.
Voles are bad climbers and will usually not enter homes, so no need to worry!
If you have voles around your home, PROTECT YOUR PLANTS! They love deep vegetation.

Cacti are only found naturally in the Americas. If any show up in the Arabian Desert, they were planted there. They do not grow naturally in that desert.
This question should actually be, where did the family moved to BEFORE little House on the Prairie! When they left Pepin, Wisconsin, they moved to Rothville, Chariton County, Missouri for almost a full year, then on to Rutland Township, Montgomery County, Kansas. When they left Kansas, they briefly went back to the Missouri home site, and then back to Pepin, Wisconsin. Since Laura never wrote about this, NO ONE talks about it or includes it, but IT HAPPENED THIS WAY! Research and court house documentation and dates proves this to be correct!
