Why do Hamsters eat their babies?

  • Hamsters eat their litter for many reasons. If the litter is not weaned and you touch them then most of the time the mom will not smell her scent and might not care for them which is one way they will die, or she feels they are a threat so she will eat them.
  • After a mother hamster gets pregnant you have to separate them from the males. They get stressed. That will cause them to eat their young as well. And the males try to take over.
  • Another reason is the mother's overcrowding and territorial instincts. If you have too many hamsters in one cage, the mom will feel that there is not any way to protect her babies anymore and will start eating them
  • Usually because she feels that they are under threat or she cannot cope with that many babies.
  • Perhaps she does not feel safe. Perhaps she is underfed or missing some kind of nutrition.
  • Typically a mother hamster needs to feel protected from people and other hamsters, with a comfortable partially secluded area. This may be a small nest box or a area piled high with shavings and litter, in a separate cage from other hamsters. Try not to disturb her too much when she has very young with her. Keep other pets away as well.

I have one. It's not the hamster. It's the cage. The smell of wood chips, urine and poop don't smell too good. But it's far from intolerable.

Is the winter white hamster nice?

If u are talking about a dwarf Russian white winter hamster, then yes, they are very nice. I have two myself, and if u get them from babies they are very easy to handle. U have to get them used to your hand first, and then try to pick them up. If u do this from a very young age and continue to handle them daily, they make great, friendly pets! They are also MAJORR cutee! If u get more than one, they may fight and chase each other for a few months, but this mostly usually stops after about 5 months.

They do sometimes bite if you handle them after u have just eaten, but if you wash your hands before and after u hold them, they will not do this. If u forget and they do bite u, its nothing to worry about, it doesnt hurt at all, or leave a mark!

They are v. cuteeee and reaally cuddly, and make great pets!

Hope my advice helped,

And i would advise u to get one!!

Why do hamsters click?

Occasionally a hamster owner may hear a clicking noise, or something that sounds like teeth chattering coming from the hamster. This clicking noise is made by the front incisors rubbing together and is known as Bruxing. Some hamster owners' misinterpret it as a sign of aggression when in fact it has nothing to do with being aggressive. The two incisors in the upper and lower jaw continuously grow throughout the life of the hamster, and normally receive continuous wear as the upper and lower incisors contact each other when eating and gnawing. A hamster's front incisors are kept as sharp as the point of a needle. As they gnaw on things like the cage bars, hard food and other hard objects the front incisors become dulled. So to put that sharp edge back on them they "Brux" Bruxing is a term used for the rubbing together of the incisors for the sole purpose of sharpening them again. Very often you may hear this clicking noise when the hamster has been gnawing on something hard and stood still as they rarely do it whilst moving.
