First, if you just got your hamster 4 weeks ago then it should be alert once you open its cage. Hamsters are very alert animals and can hear just about anything; even though they are tiny creatures. I'm sure you didn't do anything to harm him/her unless if he/she ingested something that you used to clean the cage out with. If you adopted it from someone, then it could have just passed away from old age.
