Taking care of Teddy Bear Hamsters?

How to take care of a Teddy Bear Hamster

Enviroment: You'll need a cage to put your teddy bear hamster in, and bedding. You should change his bedding every week.

Food & Water: Every 2-6 days refill its food. It depends on how much your hamster eats and weighs. Every 2 or 3 days you should probally refill its water to keep it fresh.

Excercise: Usually cages comes with wheels in the cages. If not, I recommend you buy one. You can also buy balls that the hamster can run in. If your hamster is in the ball don't put the hamster on the table or top of stairs/step unless you have a close eye on it.

Other animals in the house: If theres other animals living in your house, such as dogs and cats, you should have them and the hamster(s) keep their distance. You can put them on a higher level, like a table or a desk, so other animals don't have reach of them.

Cleaning the cage: You can start by taking the hamster out, (maybe puting them in the ball or a box), and empty the bedding into a garbage can. You can clean the cage in the sink, or with the hose outside. Scrub the cage to get all of the remainings the hamsters may leave. Refill the food and water if needed. Dry the hamster cage and put in fresh new bedding. Make sure its not too much, or too less.

Treats: Teddy bear hamsters like treats. Put a treat in their cage and when its all gone, you can put another one in. If you notice that the hamster eats the whole treat in one day, I recommend you not give it another one that day. Also pieces of wood are good for hamsters to chew on. Hamsters teeth can get so long, that it can cut its lip. Chewing on wood prevents that.

Cleaning and Trimming: If your hamster smells bad then the cage may need to be cleaned more often or needs to be freshened up with more bedding, never put a hamster in water as it washes important oils off of their fur and will make them sick, wipes are sold at petsmart or petco that are safe to use on your hamster and will not wipe their oils off you can also buy chinchilla bath sand that is perfect for hamster to groom themselves in. if you own a dwarf hamster then their nails may need to be trimmed with small cat clippers or small animal clippers, be safe not to cut the blood filled quick in the nail, this will be a pinkish coloring inside the nail if the nail is white. nail trimming usually needs to be done every week-three weeks depending on your hamsters activity

Playing with them: They do like attention and to be played with. If you touch or wake the hamster up on suprise they may jump or bite you. Teddy bear hamsters sometimes tend to bite, but not often. They like to play in their balls too.

Why do dwarf hamsters vomit?

The charactering smell of vomit, to me is butyric acid. It is also the defining odor and oxidation product of rancid butter. I pick it up very strongly in libraries and old books. Butyrates are some of the common chemicals used in paper and adhesive stabilizers so I assume these compounds are oxidizing into butyric acid. If you don't have a pet, and haven't been using butter in there, I'd start smiffing out some old books.

If your hamster has made a nest, it is a sign that she may be pregnant. A tortoiseshell hamster typically has a gestation period of around 18-21 days before giving birth. It is important to provide her with a quiet and stress-free environment during this time to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

How do you know if your hamster is in heat?

Your hamster usually is in heat when you pet it by its lower back. Your hamster then will slowly become stiff, point its tail up, hunch its back and will try to stick itself to the ground. This is not something to worry about, it happens to a lot of female hamsters. People also say this happens in a young age (1 and under) but that is not true. My hamster is about 1 and a half and it happens all the time. This also means they want a mate... now clearly that cant happen due to the fact if you gave her a mate she would most likely eat him. So why would a female want a mate if she will eat him? I'm not quite sure. But hamsters usually begin heating every 4-5 days no matter what age.

Hope I helped!

BTW when your hamster is in that hunched position, continue petting her. They like it.
