Taking care of Teddy Bear Hamsters?

How to take care of a Teddy Bear Hamster

Enviroment: You'll need a cage to put your teddy bear hamster in, and bedding. You should change his bedding every week.

Food & Water: Every 2-6 days refill its food. It depends on how much your hamster eats and weighs. Every 2 or 3 days you should probally refill its water to keep it fresh.

Excercise: Usually cages comes with wheels in the cages. If not, I recommend you buy one. You can also buy balls that the hamster can run in. If your hamster is in the ball don't put the hamster on the table or top of stairs/step unless you have a close eye on it.

Other animals in the house: If theres other animals living in your house, such as dogs and cats, you should have them and the hamster(s) keep their distance. You can put them on a higher level, like a table or a desk, so other animals don't have reach of them.

Cleaning the cage: You can start by taking the hamster out, (maybe puting them in the ball or a box), and empty the bedding into a garbage can. You can clean the cage in the sink, or with the hose outside. Scrub the cage to get all of the remainings the hamsters may leave. Refill the food and water if needed. Dry the hamster cage and put in fresh new bedding. Make sure its not too much, or too less.

Treats: Teddy bear hamsters like treats. Put a treat in their cage and when its all gone, you can put another one in. If you notice that the hamster eats the whole treat in one day, I recommend you not give it another one that day. Also pieces of wood are good for hamsters to chew on. Hamsters teeth can get so long, that it can cut its lip. Chewing on wood prevents that.

Cleaning and Trimming: If your hamster smells bad then the cage may need to be cleaned more often or needs to be freshened up with more bedding, never put a hamster in water as it washes important oils off of their fur and will make them sick, wipes are sold at petsmart or petco that are safe to use on your hamster and will not wipe their oils off you can also buy chinchilla bath sand that is perfect for hamster to groom themselves in. if you own a dwarf hamster then their nails may need to be trimmed with small cat clippers or small animal clippers, be safe not to cut the blood filled quick in the nail, this will be a pinkish coloring inside the nail if the nail is white. nail trimming usually needs to be done every week-three weeks depending on your hamsters activity

Playing with them: They do like attention and to be played with. If you touch or wake the hamster up on suprise they may jump or bite you. Teddy bear hamsters sometimes tend to bite, but not often. They like to play in their balls too.

Why do dwarf hamsters vomit?

The charactering smell of vomit, to me is butyric acid. It is also the defining odor and oxidation product of rancid butter. I pick it up very strongly in libraries and old books. Butyrates are some of the common chemicals used in paper and adhesive stabilizers so I assume these compounds are oxidizing into butyric acid. If you don't have a pet, and haven't been using butter in there, I'd start smiffing out some old books.

You just mated your hamster she made a nest you heard it takes a little for it to get fat is she pregnant how long does it take for a tortise shell hamster to give birth?

If your hamster has made a nest, it is a sign that she may be pregnant. A tortoiseshell hamster typically has a gestation period of around 18-21 days before giving birth. It is important to provide her with a quiet and stress-free environment during this time to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

How do you know if your hamster is in heat?

Your hamster usually is in heat when you pet it by its lower back. Your hamster then will slowly become stiff, point its tail up, hunch its back and will try to stick itself to the ground. This is not something to worry about, it happens to a lot of female hamsters. People also say this happens in a young age (1 and under) but that is not true. My hamster is about 1 and a half and it happens all the time. This also means they want a mate... now clearly that cant happen due to the fact if you gave her a mate she would most likely eat him. So why would a female want a mate if she will eat him? I'm not quite sure. But hamsters usually begin heating every 4-5 days no matter what age.

Hope I helped!

BTW when your hamster is in that hunched position, continue petting her. They like it.

How have hamsters adapted to life in the wild where food is sometimes scarce?

Hamsters have adapted to life in the wild by storing food in their cheek pouches and burrows during times of abundance, helping them survive when food is scarce. They can also slow down their metabolism to conserve energy when resources are limited. Additionally, their nocturnal behavior helps them avoid predators and find food efficiently during the night.

Could my hamster be pregnant I just got her a couple days ago she's fat around the belly sides she also fights with my other female hamster she sqeeks a lot soo could she be pregnant?

She could very well be pregnant. My hamster has gotten fat around the lower part of her belly after mating with my male. So I would assume that she is pregnant. It also depends on where you got her, did you get her at a petco, or petsmart? Or did you get her at some ordinary per shop, if you did get her at an ordinary pet shop, they tend to mix sexes, and ususally when you buy a hamster from here, she is pregnant, however the fighting with your other hamster is normal, after a hamster sexually matures, the same sexes fight and the opposit sexes tend to breed, so it is common for to mature female hamsters to fight. and she is proably just sneezing, I hear that a lot.

Do hamsters eat insects?

Yes, hamsters can eat insects such as mealworms and crickets as an occasional treat. Insects are a good source of protein for hamsters, but they should not make up their primary diet. It's important to ensure the insects are gut-loaded and pesticide-free before feeding them to hamsters.

How do you mate hamsters?

Hamsters mate as long as they are both of different sex and have a close relationship , they cannot mate if they are too young

hamsterluver224's answer

When the time is right, in mating season and when your hamster is mature, or old enough to mate, then they will. Place the Male in the female's cage. If the female injures the male, try again later, she is not ready. Female hamsters will kill males. If the female accepts the male, he goes over to investigate. The breeding will begin when the female makes a position called Lordosis. She stays perfectly still and raises her tail. Even experienced males have trouble if the female's tail gets in the way, etc. Eventually, the male will mount the female, breed, and dismount. This may have to happen several times for it to work. You cannot mate dwarfs with syrians or dwarfs with other dwarf species. (Ex. robo and campbell's russian)

Hope this helps---

Is my hamster dying it wont eat or drink The hamster is 2 years old. It feels cold to touch her and all she does is sleep?

Yes, your hamster is likely dying. Two years, though not much time for is, is almost a complete life for a hamster. If she is not in any pain, then just enjoy the time you have left. If she does seem to be in pain, I would recommend visiting the vet. Blessings.

What is a hamsters favorite toy?

I have heard that they really like climbing, seesaws, and of course anything that is safe wood for them to chew. seesaws are always more fun to watch if you have at least 2 hamsters kept together but it is still GREAT fun for the hamster (try to get a wood one). They LOVE tunnels. toilet paper or paper towel tubes work great and as there is always a constant supply in most households you can replace them as the hamster has fun crawling through and rolling around and tearing it to bits. You can also buy plastic tunnels that you can put together in different ways and attach to the cage (if you have the right kind). These are great for your hamster but beware they might become a hide away and it is not good to have to pull all the tunnels apart to try and get your buddy out. also if you have a large hamster you definitely do you want them to get stuck in the tunnel! personally i prefer the toilet tubes.

they also love cardboard boxes (WARNING: NEVER LEAVE THEM ALONE IN A CARDBOARD BOX AS THEY CAN CHEW OUT FASTER THEN YOU THINK. ALSO IF THERE IS ANY OTHER PETS AROUND DOG OR CAT OR WHATEVER NEVER LEAVE YOUR HAMSTER ALONE YOU DO NOT WANT A DEAD HAMSTER)! I like to connect the together and make little houses and put ramps and make furniture and stuff out of cardboard but don't be offended if they do not like the couch or bed it took you half an hour to make :P. also if you are taping the tape is probably not good for them to chew on or eat because it might even be toxic or something so just always watch your hamster when he is in these houses. also beware of pea soaking through the bottom of the box and getting on your mom's nice clean carpet! lol hope this helps have fun with your hammy.

How many babies do hamsters have at one time?

hamsters can have around 6 to 12 babies at a time. sometimes they can have more but its not likely that they will. just be careful not to breed them more than 6 times or they could become stressed and die!

Why does my hamster stick up her tail and become stiff?

That can happen when she is in heat. Petting her or touching her lower back while female hamsters are in heat cause them to stiffen up. It's somewhat like being in a state of Sexual Paralysis, and she cannot move.

This is what makes things more convenient for male hamsters to mate without being attacked or killed by an unwilling female. During mating, the male will instinctively claw and paw at the female's back, which will eventually make her hold still for him. It really only works if she is in heat though.

How do you know which hamster is good for you?

It is a good idea when getting any pet that you are not familiar with to get books out from the library. There is a lot of good information that you can find. The only other advice that I have is if you are looking for a pet to have fun with don't get a dwarf hamster even though they are soooo cute. I got one and they are not nearly as much fun to play with and hold as a bigger hamster. If you have the money Black hamsters are specially breed to be friendly and social. Plus my friend had one and it is 3 years old and just starting to fade (if that is the right word choice). Otherwise you could just go to the pet store and ask to hold some different kinds. But again I strongly incourage you to find out as much as you can and buy the proper supplies before buying your hamster. This will insure that you both have the best time possible together and your hamster lives a long and healthy life.
