Head Gaskets and Valve Covers

Gaskets are seals between two mating pieces. Head gaskets are located between the engine block and cylinder head. Valve covers refer to the protective layer that keeps oil and dirt away from the engine.

What causes antifreeze to come out of your valve cover gasket?

You have a blown head gasket. Remove the heads and replace the gaskets. Also have the heads inspected for cracks.

What are the head bolt torque settings for Toyota 3l diesel?

A cylinder head gasket is required to effect a seal between the cylinder head and block of a gasoline or diesel engine. It is an integral component of the engine and is requires to perform many functions at the same time during engine operation.

The head gasket must maintain the seal around the combustion chamber at peak operating temperature and pressure. The gasket must seal against air, coolants, combustion and engine oil at their respective peak operating temperature and pressure. The materials used and design employed must be thermally and chemically resistant to the products of combustion and the various chemicals, coolants and oils used in the engine.

When assembled, the head gasket becomes an important part of the total structure of the engine. It supports the cylinder head along with its operating components. It must be able to withstand the dynamic and thermal forces that are transmitted from the head and block. The type of engine application will be the determining factor in cylinder head gasket design. With engines ranging in size from one cylinder gasoline fired engines up to twelve cylinder, turbocharged or supercharged high-compression diesels, the material and design of the gasket is paramount to it's functional life span.

Every application requires a unique cylinder head gasket design to meet the specific performance needs of the engine. The materials and designs used are a result of testing and engineering various metals, composites and chemicals into a gasket that is intended to maintain the necessary sealing capabilities for the life of the engine.(See Fig. 1).

What kind of symptoms can a blown head gasket cause?

The chief symptom i see is overheating. The second most common symptom that i see is white smoke coming out of the tailpipe as wel as being able to smell antifreeze in the exhaust. The antifreeze level will drop of course. Some people say a sign is water in the oil but i find that to be an uncommon symptom of a bad head gasket.

Occasionally you will see a head gasket protruding out of where the head and block meet.

I must point out that other problems may also cause these symptoms. Overheating could be a bad thermostat or plugged radiator.

White smoke out of the exhaust can be a sign of Plenum burn thru ( very common on the GM 3.8 motors.)

Oil in the antifreeze is usually a sign of a bad intake gasket.

If the car overheated recently then it is very possible that the head is cracked or is warped. You will want to have that checked if you do the head gasket

The definitive test that i use to determine if there is antifreeze getting into a cylinder is to pull all spark plugs. First - fill the radiator. Then put a pressure tester on the cooling system and pressure the cooling system up to 15 pounds....wait... keep the pressure tester up to around 15 pounds

. After 30 minutes or so crank over the engine (with the spark plugs still out) If antifreeze blasts out of a cylinder then you know what cylinder has the bad head gasket or cracked head. ( DO NOT STAND in the way of any cylinder as the antifreeze may come out with a surprizing amout of force and volume and you will get soaked with antifreeze,)

Autozone has a tool loaner program and will lend you a pressure tester.

Best of luck.

If antifreeze comes out of ALL cylinders then you have the famous GM plenum burn thru.

Best of luck (^_^)

What causes lots of white smoke from exhaust when warmed up and no power loss or leaks you can see and no coolant in oil?

Possible that coolant is leaking into combustion chamber and burning off. Does engine act like its missing at idle and smooths out at higher rpms? possible head gasket. I had the same problem i used steelseal.com worth its weight in gold.

Torque on a 1977 350 engine?

Advertised Horsepower and toqure is:

165 HP @ 3800RPMS. TORQUE IS: 260 FT. LBS. @ 2400 RPMS.

What material is a cylinder head made of?

Cast iron or aluminum are the most common materials used.

How do you know head gasket is blown?

I usually hook up a pressure tester to the radiator for about 20 minutes or so...pull the spark plugs out then crank over the motor. If the head gasket is blown then antifreeze will usually have gotten into the cylinder that has the blown section of the head gasket. When you crank over the engine then antifreeze will squirt out of the cylinder with the antifreeze in it.

Also smell the exhaust.. can you smell antifreeze in the exhaust. Is there white smoke coming out of the tailpipe ? That is also a sign of a bad head gasket.

Finally. Does the car overheat after a short period of driving ? Yet another sign of a bad head gasket.

Purpose of the cylinder head?

The cylinder head is a critical component of an internal combustion engine, serving as the upper part of the engine block. It houses essential elements such as the intake and exhaust valves, spark plugs, and fuel injectors, facilitating the flow of air and fuel into the combustion chamber while allowing exhaust gases to exit. Additionally, it helps maintain compression within the cylinders and is integral to the overall thermal management of the engine. Proper functioning of the cylinder head is vital for optimal engine performance and efficiency.

Will replacing a blown head gasket cause oil burning on a Grand Am?

If you didn't have an oil burning problem before the replacement sounds like there is a leak from an oil passage into your combustion chamber via headgasket. Another area to consider is piston rings could be worn or you may have leaky valve stem seals. These are the major causes of oil burning.

How do you identify heads on engine?

If you need to know this i wouldn't suggest opening the engine to that extent. Grab a manual its like the bible its surely to help you out completely.

94 Nissan D21 2.4 head bolt torque spec?

crankshaft around 140lbs. im not 100% sure, but around there. check other websites or your car manuel.

Can a blown head gasket be fixed without lifting the engine?

Without knowing what application you have this cannot be answered. For the majority an engine does not have to be pulled. It all about whether you can access the heads for removal or not.

What would make your head gasket blow?

The most common way is from excessive heat like a bad thermostat or from low or no coolant. When a vehicle gets several hundred thousand miles on them age can also be a factor.

if you blow a head gasket from overheating you should have the head checked to make sure it isn't warped. especially if it's an aluminum head like most newer vehicles have.

How long does it take to replace valve cover gasket?

About as long as it takes for you to scream your head straight off your body. (because it hurts so much)

Wow, that was useful. Was that "primal scream" therapy?

Seriously, you're never going to find the answer to this online. Too much money is being made on selling these manuals to mechanics, and just about ANY "free" online source will have committed copyright violation if they publish times that are anywhere near the ones in the "official" guides.

Your best bet? Ask a mechanic you trust for a quote. Your next-best bet? Ask an authorized dealer's service advisor. Nothing says you have to let them do the work!

If you're adventurous, spend the $15 on a service manual at your local auto parts store (or look it up in a copy at your local library), buy the parts and do it yourself - it's pretty straightforward, but requires great care and attention to detail. You MUST clean ALL old gasket material from contact surfaces; ensure you don't drop any crap into the valvetrain; and re-tighten the cover bolts in the correct pattern to the correct torque - otherwise, you'll be doing it (or more) again.

Where is the head gasket on a 2002 chrysler town and country 3.8 engine?

This engine has two head gaskets. They are between each cylinder head and the engine block.

Will a blown head gasket keep a car form cranking?

It could if the coolant is leaking on to the top of the piston.

Does a blown head gasket cause you to have no heat?

If the coolant system is full, the heater should still work. However, if the head gasket leak is really bad, it will be impossible to keep full, plus the exhaust bubbling through the coolant could airlock the heater core circulation. The engine is pretty much ruined if its been driven with this kind of problem for more than a couple days - it isn't cooled right and the water in the oil wrecks lubrication. This is a pretty general question - hard to answer - but have someone check it out.
