Henri Matisse

He was very versatile: apart from oil painting he made pencil drawings, ink drawings, sculptures, glass and wall designs, textiles, ...

He is especially famous for his decoupées (paper cutouts) he made during the last part of his life.

He painted in a figurative style for almost his entire career but not realistic (that is - he painted recognisable figures and objects, but distorted and abstracted to a certain degree). In his old age, his cut-paper works became more abstract.

The purpose of Matisse's paintings were that he wanted to show something different, instead of imitating the world, he wanted to change it to show meaning and feeling by using unrealistic colours and patterns.

He had two brothers. one named Emile Auguste who was born in 1872 and died 2years later. the other was called Auguste Emile who was born the year his other brother died: 1874.

Henri Matisse's painting 'The King's Sadness' was created out of cut-out paper after a bout of cancer, when he was too sick to paint. It is a self-portrait depicting the pleasures of his life.

Fauvism, which is a kind of Expressionism.

He lead a group of artists called the fauvists.

The fauvist rejected traditional painting and sculpture ideals and emphasized modern concepts, notably machines and motion. Inspired by the late impressionist works of Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh who pushed the boundaries with their bold color choices, the movement took this idea a step further to include simplified design.

The French word "fauves," means the wild beasts, and that title was appropriate because of their use of uncontrolled, abrasive, and intense colors. == ==

Mainly Fauvism. Initially he painted still-lifes and landscapes in the traditional Flemish style. However he also used Pointillism, Impressionism, Primitivism.

There seems to be no record of their first meeting. They married in 1898.

The red color.

Matisse died of a heart attack at the age of 84 in 1954. He is interred in the cemetery of the Monastère Notre Dame de Cimiez, near Nice.

In 1887 he went to Paris to study law, working as a court administrator in Le Cateau-Cambrésis after gaining his qualification. He first started to paint in 1889. He discovered "a kind of paradise" and decided to become an artist. In 189 he returned to Paris to study art at the Académie Julian and became a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. get a life

Because he had an illness and could then no longer do painting. Instead, he then did 'paper cutouts' which he called 'painting with scissors'.
