Hiking and Backpacking

Hiking is going for a walk, but doing it in the wilderness. Backpacking is taking that walk one step further and refers to hiking while carrying a pack on your back. A backpack with extra gear and supplies usually implies longer trips. What you take with you and how how far you hike is up to you. Whether it is a half day jaunt along a local park trail or a week in the deep forest, hiking and backpacking improves people's physical and mental health and general well-being.

What should you do if you encounter a mountain lion?

Interacting with mountain lions is very different from dealing with other potential predators like bears. Mountain lions are strictly meat-eaters and skilled hunters, but they are also shy.

The most important thing you can do is prevention. The key preventative measure is to always hike with someone else (the more the merrier) and be noisy while you hike; mountain lions don't want to see people. Mountain lions are more likely to attack people hiking alone, especially children because they are easier prey. If you are hiking with children, keep them close by and do not let them hike out in front of the group or straggle behind.

If you do encounter a mountain lion, you have to deter it from attacking. Stop where you are, stand your ground, and try look as big and scary as possible. Stand on something like a rock or log so you look taller, wave your arms and with sticks in your hands if available, yell at the lion, and stand your ground. Never try to run away; it will encourage the lion to run after you and you can't possibly outrun it. If you have a deterrent such as pepper spray, that might be useful if the lion approaches. There may be times when a firearm is useful, but such occurrences would be extremely rare and should be a last resort.

If the mountain lion attacks you, FIGHT BACK. Use anything available to you, such as rocks, knives, or your fists. Try to hit it anyplace that would hurt enough to make it decide you aren't worth trying to eat, such as the eyes. If you try to play dead to deal with a mountain lion, you will be dead.

Is a northface backpack easy to break?

I don't know about all north face back packs, but my north face recon the zippers aren't very well made. I do tend to stuff my book bag to the maximum, but I thought the northface bag was made to be tough. Anyways the zipper broke easily within 1 year of use. I still use the bag, the rest of the bag was fine but I do think it got shabbier. I've had the bag for about 4 years now, it has a weird shape where it's wider on the bottom of the bag and narrows up top.

On the other hand, my manhattan portage bag which has been stuffed to the max many many times is still going strong after ten years. My brother's timbuk2 which is a similar brand is still just as sturdy and he's had his bag for about just as long as mine, 9 years or so.

In the end, when purchasing an expensive, heavy duty bag, such as one for hiking and backpacking, I really suggest going to the store if you get the chance to actually look at the bag, stuff like the shape you wouldn't be able to get the best picture online. Also look at the reviews and see what other people have done with their bags and if it matches your uses/lifestyle. I sincerely think timbuk2 and manhattan portage are more reliable in terms of durability because they stick to the same basic styles and are known to last whereas Northface comes up with a new style every other year it seems, the variety makes it hard to choose a good one within all the choices. Perhaps a well known northface bag that is a style that has been kept over the years would also be a good choice.

Good luck in your backpack search!

What is the best way to keep your bearings while hiking into an unfamiliar terrain?

Features: if your route is to back-track, look back now and then on the outwards trek to memorise what each stage or path junction will look like on your way home. (This is actually a tip I picked up in caving!)

What is good about a hybrid backpacking backpack?

As the only thing that came up when I googled this was a hard cased backpack, I'll have to answer based on that.

The benefits to this are that if you were to drop it, you wouldn't damage the contents of it.

The drawbacks to this design are that if you need to pass through areas, you'd need to take your backpack off as opposed to allowing it to snag.

Realistically, you would want to go for comfort more than design, my current backpack is about 5-6 years of use down and still works like it did, were it a 'hybrid' backpack, I suspect it might've not lasted as long.

Knivsmed isak stromeng 9730 karasjok tif 66440 does anyone remember when this knife was made?

I'm not sure when your specific knife was made, but I purchased a "Same kniv" from him in 1980 while I was serving in the Norwegian army at Porsangermoen. We went on a weekend shopping trip by bus to Finland, and on our way there we stopped at his knife smith shop in Karasjok and I purchased this knife that I still have. The only thing I remember about his place was that it was pretty small, and it was very cold outside when we went there.
