Good deals on hiking clothes can be found at most sporting goods stores. Sierra Trading Post and REI are two stores known for deals on hiking clothes.

Backpacking also has it's basic five these being in order of importance hiking, shoes, the backpack, sleeping gear, and shelter.

A Dakine backpack is one of the best choices for extended hiking trips. Made everywhere but China, their quality is a sharp contrast from Ching Chang brands backpacks. They are truly the minimum for carrying air.

Hiking boots are generally heavier than typical shoes, but they also offer more ankle protection and a more durable and rugged sole than most shoes. Many hikers now use low-top hiking shoes, due to how lightweight they are compared to the traditional hiking boots.

In the end, it is the decision of the individual, whether the ankle support and protection is more important than weight.

Walking down-hill, especially with a heavy pack, puts a very high strain on your legs.

I dare say this question was supposed to be "where do people work on mountainous areas?" But I'm not entirely sure.

Instead, wash it with mild soap and water. You can clean it in the washer on the delicate

cycle with mild soap too.

I personally think the Recon is a better bag. It looks better (in my opinion), and you can use it for much more things opposed to any variant of the Hot Shot. If you think about it, the regular Hot Shot (and I believe is pretty much the same as the Base Camp) is only really 2 main compartments and 3 daisy chains which I see no use for. The recon has that (minus the daisy chains) plus a stretchy mesh pocket in the front, along with an additional accessory pocket in the front. Recon wins.

21 kilometres in heavy terrain? A while.

I find myself able to hold a steady 4 miles per hour, which would be around 6.4 kilometres, on level ground.
So at that pace, it'd be about 3.5-4 hours.

Add in the 'heavy terrain' and you'd be looking at about 4.3 kilometres an hour, assuming you could keep 6.4 going for an extended period.

So about 5-6 hours.

If you are rock climbing or backpacking in steep terrain and you hear or are told that rocks are falling in your direction, get behind something sturdy. If nothing is available to hide behind them press yourself against the wall, hillside, mountain and cover your head. You can use your pack as a shield if you have the time. If you are at the top of the group that is hiking and you dislodge a rock that falls then it is your duty to yell out "ROCK" to warn those below you.

It's natural to look up when you hear "rock!" but try not to. Cover your head if there is nothing to hide behind.

"Buck" actually is a brand. There are many different manufacturers our there that make a quality knife. It really depends on what your needs are. Hunting and fishing have different needs in a knife. First figure out what your needs are. I prefer a quality multi-tool. Leathermans and Gerber both have fine quality tools that can meet almost any need.

they are dirty...long tangled hair, dirty faces, worn out clothes, dirty teeth...one wishes he had scissors to cut his hair, a toothbrush for his teeth, and a bath with soap... but they don't mind for the fact that they are used to being dirty like that.

The best hiking tents for inexperienced hikers will be lightweight and easy to put together. Inexperienced hikers will need a hiking tent that is fairly small, so it will be easier to handle, some examples of these are tents from Wenzel and Backcountry.

I don't! I think it a "behaviour" in minimising risk - the objective hazards won't go away but the risksthey pose to you depend heavily on how you assess and approach them; and that is partly a matter of knowledge and experience.

That really depends on the physical condition of the person. A person that hikes and backpacks can easily walk 10 miles a day even with a backpack. 43 years old is not "old". A physically fit man can walk a long distance.
