The Babel fish was a fish (really!) that was placed in a person's ear, thus enabling him to understand any language in the galaxy. Somehow, by placing the fish in one's ear, it translated the language.

A towel is considered the most massively useful thing for an interstellar hitchhiker to have in the book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." The guide advises that a towel can be used for various practical purposes during travels through the galaxy.

In "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," the number 42 is presented as the answer to the "Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything." The green character on the covers of the American versions of the Hitchhiker's Guide series is known as the Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses. They are a fictional product in the series that turn completely black at the first hint of danger. The character was designed by Peter Cross, the cover artist for the American editions, and became an iconic symbol of the series.

I was mistaken in believing that there were two girls that spoke to Deep Thought.

I did research (elsewhere on the Internet) and found out that they were a young girl and a young boy, playing the characters Lunkwill and Fook. They were played by four men, two at a time, "every 7.5 million years" in the TV Series.

In the 'Hitchikers Guide', the major conflict is the aliens destroying the earth to make room for a space highway. This is significant because many years ago, (millions) an intelligent race of mice built a super computer to make the ultimate answer: 42. This launched they quest to build another super computer to find the ultimate question to the ultimate answer. The Earth was that second super-computer.

It is the first two bars of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, the first movement. It is because he is trying to save himself and Arthur from being thrown of the ship into space without spacesuits which is even more fatal.

like the last person said its 42 because 42 is categoriacly inverted by the integers of the divine fraction, thus making it a necesary key to the sub-complex division of life's true cause. This was proved by philosopher Charles Leland in the 19th Century.

But the real thing that we need to know now is the question to the answer to life, the universe, and everything. What is 6x7 is the question that they came up with, but if the true question to the answer were discovered while we know the answer, the universe would explode and then reform even more insane than it was this time. It is theorized that this has already happened several times already.

Another reason for 42 is that, in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Deep Thought says that the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything is 42. When they try to find the ultimate question, Arthur Dent realizes that his brain contains the question, and he draws tiles out of a bag saying: What do you get when you multiply six by nine?
