How do you horses breed?

How you breed a horse varies somewhat by the breed's regulations and your location.

Some breeds, like the Thoroughbred are only allowed to do 'live cover'. This means you must breed a live mare to a live stallion and it must be witnessed by more than one person.

Live cover can have a few variations:

1. Breeding shed type live cover: Most common in Thoroughbreds, this is where the breeding process is highly coordinated and controlled by the handlers. The stallion will be lead to a mare and allowed to inspect her before mounting and breeding. The mare will have kicking boots and possibly breeding hobbles to keep her from kicking.

2. Field cover: Where a stallion and either one or more mares are turned loose and allowed to breed freely for a certain period of time. This method is the most natural, but potentially dangerous if the mare kicks out and breaks one of the stallions legs.

Artificial insemination (AI) is where a stallion is taught to mount a 'phantom mare' and to ejaculate into a tube called an artificial vagina. The semen is then checked and divided into 'straws' (pipettes) which can then be used to impregnate the chosen mare. The semen can also be used to fertilize an egg which will then be placed inside a recipient mare instead of the mare whom the egg originally belonged to. This is done if the mare is competing, or may not be able to successfully care a fetus to term.

Can colt give birth to a filly?

Why do horses kill other horses babies?

Well there are several reasons for it. Some foals are sick and won't survive but the mother won't harm her baby, but another horse that senses the foals problem may chase the mother off and kill the foal to prevent suffering. Stallions will kill very young foals to cause a mare to go back into heat immediately, and some horses are extremely territorial and will kill anything , foals included to defend it's space.

How much money do Anglo Arabian Foals cost?

The price of all horse breeds are variable and therefore a set price is not achievable, but that being said each breed does tend to have a fairly 'stable' price range. Anglo Arabians tend to be about 'middle priced' from about $3,000 on upward as a general rule. You may however find one below this price.

How many kids can a pinto horse have 1 year?

A horse is pregnant for about 11 months, so it'll only have one foal a year.

Answer2:

As stated above a horse is pregnant for roughly 11 months. It should also be noted that a horses color (pinto is a color / marking, not a breed) in no way affects how many foals it can have in one year. A horse typically only gives birth to one foal, with twins being a fairly rare occurrence and triplets are nearly unheard of.

Why do horses mate weird?

Horses do not mate in any weird fashion. Simply, they mate as is physically possible. Each species has it's own way of physically copulating. Humans are able to do so in a variety of ways, but horses generally do not have that type of flexability.

In short, a horse could ask, "Why do humans mate weird?" It's not weird, it's just different.

What happens if you put 2 pregnant mares together?

Not totally sure, you horse owners out there probably know.

I don't own horses, sadly, but I don't think anything happens if you put 2 pregnant mares in the same meadow or stable or whatever. They might sniff each other...that's all I know. They might be moody like human females when they're pregnant, so be considerate when riding a pregnant mare, as in, don't tighten the girth as tight as you might usually do, and when grooming her, groom carefully at her belly. And ESPECIALLY do NOT whack her on her pregnant belly because she won't like that and she might hurt you. So...be nice!

How long do you have to lay down to get pregnant since my boyfriend pulled out?

Pregancy does not rely on whether the woman remains lying down post intercourse.

Neither is "pulling out" a particularly good form of birth control...if that was the intent.

Can a paint horse give birth to a Welsh?

Paint horses and Welsh horses are two different breeds. They can certainly be bred together, but the foal would only be half Welsh, not purebred Welsh. It can have all the characteristics of a Welsh, but can't be registered as a Welsh. A Paint horse is a breed but a pinto is not a breed just the paint coloring, A pinto horse can give birth to a full welsh horse as long as the welsh mare is pinto in color. * ** Although paint welsh ponies can't be registered either** so technically, if you want to cross a painted welsh with another welsh so the foal is full welsh, you can't register it even though it is full welsh. (EDIT: this is incorrect, if you breed a Paint and a Welsh, then breed the foal to a purebred Welsh, your baby will still have Paint lines, and WILL NOT be a purebred Welsh pony.)

First off Pinto and Paints are BOTH colorings and a breeds, and are actually very similar. When the USA was discovered, there were stocky spotted horses, that came to be known as Paints, Pintos, Skewbalds and Piebalds. First an organization to promote and protect the integrity of conformation and color of the Pintos was formed (see http://www.pinto.org), this was developed primarily as a color registry, but now the horses must fall into one of four conformation catagories. Pinto is a very diverse breed as there are nineteen recognized outcross breeds (see http://www.pinto.org/about_pinto.html), grouped by conformation/suitability. Later an organization know known as the APHA (American Paint Horse Association) developed a similar organization.

On to outcrossing, Welsh ponies are listed as acceptable outcrosses for the Pinto breed, meaning you could have a purebred Welsh foal, who, if they show the proper color characterists can be double registered as both a Welsh and a Pinto. So a Pinto could give birth to a Welsh, but the sire/dam would both also be Welsh. Of course you could also have a Welsh sire, and a Pinto damn, foal a half Welsh. The Paint registry is stricter in breed credentials. To be considered a Paint, the sire and dam must BOTH be registered with either the American Paint Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse, Association or the Jockey Club (TBs). One of the parents MUST be registered with the APHA. As Welsh is not an accepted breed for the Paint registry, you could not have a purebred Welsh double registered as a Paint, and a Paint could not give birth to a purebred Welsh foal. If your sire is a Welsh, and your dam is a Paint, then the Paint mare could birth a half Welsh foal. The baby, however, would not be considered a purebred Paint or purebred Welsh.
