A horse breeder practices eugenics with two winning race horses why?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Because the whole idea of eugenics is to get something better by breeding the best. When you breed one winner to another winner, you improve your chances of getting another winner (at least in theory). The whole point of racing is to make a horse faster (although "stronger" should be in there too, but is often ignored, which is part of why so many horses get injured).

What does a place mean in horse racing betting?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In horse racing, the horse must finish in the top two, or three, or four of a particular event. If the selection you have placed a bet on is among those places, you will win. As a general rule, in larger races, a horse must finish in the top three but in smaller races, the selection may need to finish in second, or even first, place. These types of races are ran with the horses harnessed up to a 'sulkie', a lightweight 2-wheeled cart. Unlike other types of horseracing, the harness races are all ran at a fast-paced trot. If the horse 'breaks' from the trot he is disqualified.

What is the significance of Melbourne cup?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It's called the "Race that stops a nation", it draws a on course attendance of 100,000 + each year. It's a public holiday in it's native Victoria, with all other states having major race events to support it.

The prize pool for the race last year was over $6 million dollars AUS, the money taken on the day by the betting agency TAB is phenomenal all over Australia.

In 2010 TAB took $107.5 Million on the race in bets.

It attracts an international field vying for the prize.

For most people in Australia it's a day off work, in my native Western Australia due to the time zone differences of 3 hours, the first race starts around 07:30 am Western time and our last race (trots or dogs) in Western Australia finishes around 11 pm. So it's a long day!

What do you call a person that rides horses in races?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A jockey is a professional athlete who rides racehorses.

Most jockeys are self-employed, but represented by an agent who helps them find mounts (horses) to ride. This can be a difficult task when the person is starting his or her career, as racehorse trainers are reluctant to take risks with unknown riders because both the rider's and trainer's income depends on winning as many races as possible.

Jockeys whose horses win first, second or third place (also called win, place and show) are paid a percentage of the "purse," or prize money. The winning rider receives 6 percent of the purse; the second "place" rider receives 1 percent; and the third "show" rider receives a half percent. Jockeys also receive a fee, called a jock mount, of $35-50 everytime they race, win or not.

A successful jockey often rides in more than 1,000 races a year; a few jockeys have ridden more than 50,000 races during their career.

Most jockeys are between 5' and 5'7" tall, and weigh between 110 and 116 pounds. Both men and women compete in this sport, but women are under-represented at only 10%.

Horseracing is considered one of the most dangerous sports because an average of two jockeys die every year in the United States, and many more are seriously injured.
