This is my question but I'm helping people out. I have a HTC Desire, just like the HTC One, but I've had it to where I can see who's birthday it is from Facebook on my lock screen. If you have it that way and it doesn't show up, go to your Facebook app, and re-sync your contacts. Then you can go to the calendar, refresh it and it should start loading peoples birthdays and events back. That should fix it, it does for me. Took me 6 months or so to figure that out. Sorry for such a long answer but its easier that way.

What is the best way to root an HTC One?
Before you decide that you want to root your HTC One, think of the reasons as to why you would want to root. Do you want to root so you can take more control on how your phone is setup? Do you want to root because you want to back up all your apps, SMS/MMS, and call logs, including data? Do you also want to root so you can install a custom ROM? If you answered yes to one or all of these questions, then rooting is for you. Keep in mind though that there are risks in rooting a device, which may include "bricking" and voiding your warranty...so, be careful. Also, backup what you can before doing this, as the phone will be reset at some point and all data will be removed.
The basic instructions:
- Download and install to the desktop the Android SDK from Google (see Related Links) and install the necessary USB drivers and tools for your HTC One. If you have the HTC Sync Manager, it should download the necessary drivers for you.
- Register on the free HTC Dev site (see Related Links)--once registered, HTC will allow you to unlock your One's bootloader. Follow the instructions step-by-step on that site.
- After your phone is unlocked, you can now root your HTC One.
- Reboot the phone.
- Download the both the TWRP recovery file (see Related Links) to your PC (place it in your Fastboot and ADB files) and the SuperUser zip file (see Related Links) and transfer it over to your One in its internal storage.
- Go to the command prompt on your PC and while USB plugged, put your One in Fastboot mode. Type "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" (no quotations) and press the Enter key.
- Once that is done, turn off your One, and turn it on and put it in Bootloader mode (volume down and power button keys at the same time). Choose Recovery and wait for it to load. It should take you to the TWRP recovery app. Choose Install and then look for your SuperUser zip that you stored in the phone. That app will then be flashed onto your One.
- Reboot your phone and you should now be rooted.
