Hurricane Sandy

Sandy formed on October 22, 2012 and became a hurricane on October 24.

As of today, November 5th, 2012, there have been 185 fatalities, with 22 persons still unaccounted for.

In terms of wind speed it is not, at least compared with other historic hurricanes. Sandy had sustained winds of 110 mph in the Cribbean and 90 mph when it struck New Jersey. So it was a strong category 1 storm.

However, the storm's enormous size and extremely low pressure made up for this, increasing the area of damage caused. The powerful storm surge had very destructive effects in Maryland, New Jersey, and especially Staten Island, NY and even flooded the New York City subway system. The rains from Sandy flooded many areas along the east coast of the US.

All large scale storm systems on earth have low pressure. The low pressure pulls in air that can act a fuel for the storm and creates a pressure gradient force that generates wind. Generally speaking, the lower the pressure in a storm, the stronger it is.

Hurricane Sandy struck the New York/New Jersey area on October 29, 2012.

Like most hurricanes, Sandy started as a disorganized cluster of thunderstorms called a tropical disturbance, in this case over the Caribbean Sea. By feeding on the moisture evaporated from warm ocean water this disturbance strengthened and organized into a tropical cyclone. This storm then traveled northward. As Sandy moved parallel to the U.S. east coast it interacted with cooler air and an extratropical weather system and began to lose tropical characteristics. Eventually, a powerful high pressure system over Greenland produced a blocking pattern, the weather equivalent of a traffic jam, and prevented Sandy from continuing northward or turning eastward as other east coast hurricanes do. Instead, Sandy made an unprecedented turn westward, slamming into the east coast as a hybrid cyclone.

The human death tolll is still rising. Over 4 million homes were without electricity (many still are), and over 100 homes burned to the ground in NYC. At one point, the storm was over 1,000 miles wide (east-to-west) and 900 miles from north-to-south. I covered a swath frim Chicago through Maine. It is a conservative estimate to point out that over 10 million people were affected by Hurricane Sandy; from Jamaica to eastern Canada.

Damage from Hurricane Sandy is estimated to cost $65 billion. As far as Atlantic hurricanes go, this makes Sandy's price tag second only to that of Hurricane Katrina.

New York City public schools were closed on Halloween 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy.
