Can drinking and taking high blood pressure medicine cause a person to pass out?

It simply can't believe my stumbling upon this site, more specifically to run across a question on this particular topic.

Tomorrow it will be 3 week's since my brother in law collapsed & was rushed to the hospital where he passed-away 3 hours later due to the combination of alcohol & his high blood pressure medication, he was 42 years-old. To make it all the sadder he had finally married his long time girlfriend 2 years-ago & they had just told my husband and myself they had decided they were going to try & have a baby.

I've been a paramedic for over 20 years now & have seen a good number of patients who have had serious reactions to or even died from combining medications which can have serious consequences if combined & it's not as infrequent as you'd think. It's a common mistake to assume medications are safe to take together if the label or the back of the box says "Use Caution Taking This Medication & Do Not Drive or Operate Heavy Equipment Until You Know How The Medication Effects You" & while this can be true in some cases it can be extremely dangerous in others. I'm sure everyone has taken some type of over the counter antihistamine or decongestant & if you read the back of the box a large majority of them will tell you not to take the medication if you take medication for high blood pressure until you've checked with your doctor and he tells you it's ok to take the two at once.

I hope this will help someone avoid the tragedy which our family is trying to cope with on a daily basis by helping you realize there are no innocuous drugs out there even if the box says 100% natural......pot, opium are 100% organic & can be just as dangerous as any synthetic (man made) drug on the marked so watch out if you go to the health food store because these so called natural remedies do not require the DEA to approve them prior to putting them on the market.

God Bless,

Maegi

What blood pressure would be by a hypertensive patient?

Blood pressure is assessed by measuring two pressures. The maximum pressure (called systolic) and the minimum pressure (diastolic). When the heart pumps blood it squirts it into the arteries. Each time the heart contracts so it goes from highest during the squirt or pulse to lowest when at rest before and after the squirt. These are usually written with the high pressure over low pressure. Ideal is usually considered 120/80. If either of these two pressures is too high the person is considered hypertensive.

Most authorities would consider a patient with blood pressure higher than 140 over 90 to be hypertensive (needing treatment) and higher than 160 over 100 to be seriously (Stage 2) hypertensive.

What's not often mentioned when discussing these numbers is they are for routine or sustained blood pressure. Everyone's blood pressure can jump up during periods of excitement, fear, stress, adrenaline release etc. I've read that members of the polar bear club's systolic blood pressure can go as high a 200 when they plunge into the icy water.

What are the treatments and control for physiological diseases?

Physiology encompasses the tissue, organ and cellular functions of the human body. An optimally healthy body has normal physiology. Conversely, human disease represents an aberration in normal physiology--something in the body fails to function as it should. Normal physiology can be disrupted by a variety of mechanisms, ultimately manifesting as disease. Hemochromatosis, iron-deficiency anemia and iron-reutilization anemia exemplify different types of physiological abnormalities that can affect body systems, leading to disease.

What are the symptoms for a mild heat stroke?

As a firefighter/EMT i will give you what we look for. First off there is not a mild heat stroke, there are 3 stages of hyperthermia or elevated heat levels. 1. is heat cramps, muscle spasms, cramps, usually due to lack of salt in the body due to you losing it, also due to electrolyte imbalance to the muscles, most commonly from overexertion in hot tempartures with excessive sweating. 2. Heat exhaustion-it can cause a disturbance in the bodies blood flow causing a mild state of shock. Which is caused by vasodilation from the body working harder to maintain heat loss.agin this is due to loss of water and salt in the body, In such cases the patient will be normal to cool, either pale or ashen grey in color, and sweaty, dizzy or fatigued. 3. Heat stroke- this has a mortality rate of 20-80%. the signes are rapid pulse that is strong but becomes weak, initial deep rapid breathing that becomes shallow and weak, seizures, loss of appetite, vomiting, altered mental status. Hot skin that is either dry or moist is a sign of a DIRE EMERGANCY.

Should your blood pressure be lower in the morning?

Since arterial pressure varies throughout the day, measurements intended to monitor changes over longer time frames should be taken at the same time of day to ensure that the readings are comparable. Suitable times are: * immediately after awakening (before washing/dressing and taking breakfast/drink), while the body is still resting, * immediately after finishing work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_pressure#Home_monitoring

Depends on the medication. If this is extremely unusual, it could be a sign of many things. Call his cardiologist and keep a log throughout the day of his heart rates. Also, ask him about any dizziness, etc, especially when standing from a sitting position. Any lightheadedness--tell his doctor you want him seen TODAY. Could be a sign he needs a pacemaker.

Genetic factors of hypertension?

at least 10 genes are involved in controlling blood pressure. Most of these genes work by controlling the amount of salt and water reabsorbed into the blood by the kidney. The gene angiotensinogen (AGT) is a protein made in the liver that controls salt and water retention, which controls blood pressure. Variants of AGT have been linked to a predisposition to hypertension.
