Hockey wasn't invented by on specific person or group. However, it is generally accepted that Scottish settlers were the first to play it in Nova Scotia in the late 1700s. At this time there was mass migration to Canada of people from the Highlands of Scotland who imported many of their traditions, culture and pastimes. Ice Hockey became a Winter version of a game known as Shinty which has been played in the Highlands of Scotland for centuries. There are many similarities, most notably the stick or caman. The word 'puck' is also derived from old Scots, meaning to hit. There is also an unofficial game still played in Canada which is known as Shinny, a name derived from Shinty. There is also a claim that Hockey is a relation of Hurling which started in Ireland as the sport of Hurley. However, the conncetions are tenuous as mass emigration to Canada form Ireland did not occur until the mid to late nineteenth century. The equipment also differs considerably. Of course, there are other stories.Some say the MicMac indians played a form of hockey in Nova Scotia when the Europeans arrived. In Windsor, Nova Scotia, there is a school called Kings View Academy. A teacher there supposedly took his students out to the pond behind their school and asked them to make up a sport. The game they played became hockey.Another interesting story says that ice hockey was first played in 1885 by British soldiers stationed in Canada. Guards who were guarding the Parliament building in Canada used to sneak off to a nearby field and play ice hockey. Some say they started by whacking rocks with a stick to stay warm. Two towns claim that the first game of hockey was played there. The first is Kingston, Ontario, and the second is a small town in New Brunswick, both of which are in Canada. It is generally accepted that the current rules for hockey evolved from students at McGill University in Montreal ("the McGill Rules") in 1875. Around 1920 the NHL was formed by Canada. It grew. Rules evolved. For example in the 1920's you were aloud to pass forward.

There are basically two trade deadlines. July 31 is the deadline for straight trades to be executed. However, trades can occur up to August 31, the caveat being that players traded during the month of August must first pass through the waiver list. So if I wanted to trade someone I can do so without restriction up to July 31. If I want to trade someone between August 1 and August 31, I must first put the player on waivers. If some other team claims the player I will pull the player off the waiver list and not make the trade. If no team claims the player off the waiver list I can make the trade.

The very first Stanley Cup winner was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. Montreal AAA for short. They were also known as the Montreal Hockey Club. They won in 1893. They were awarded the Cup as they were the AHAC champions. In 1894, they beat the Ottawa HC.

The first team to win the Stanley Cup when NHL teams were able to win the Cup was the Toronto Arenas in 1917 against the Vancouver Millionaires (PCHA).

Keep this in the back of your mind, IT IS NOT AS MUCH AS IT SOUNDS! Here is what you need to start playing hockey- For males a cup, they are called jocks in hockey For females you will still need somthing similure to a jock. It is called a Jill.You next need shin guards. These cover from your knee to about an inch or so above your anckle. You need hockey pants. These are from about you belly button to a little below your knees. You wear them just like regular pants. Obviessly you need Skates. To cover you elbows you wear elbow pads. For the rest of you chest and back erea you were shoulder pads. They are close to the ones you would wear for football. Youth players are supposed to wear next guards. These are very important! You need a jersey also. You have to wear a helmet! Untill College you have to were a cage. This goes on the front of your helmet to protect your face. Hockey gloves go on your hands. Last is a mouth guard. It is only required for youth players but even up to the NHL, some people wear them. If your planning on buying gear here are some tips- Hockey gear is not cheap. You can buy bottom of the line to save a little bit of money but not much and plus the gear is not as good then. I sugguest if you know what you are buying to use E-bay. Some rinks have used gear sales too. Stores like Play It Again Sports are a good way to save money. If you want to buy your gear new go to a Store like Dicks Sporting Goods instead of a hockey shop or pro shop in an ice rink. It's always cheaper that way. Be sure that you have an expirenced hockey person help you when buying gear for the first time.

Although Billy Burch of the New York Americans was raised in Toronto, he was born in Yonkers, New York. He became the second player to ever win the Lady Byng in 1927. Frank Nighbor of the Ottawa Senators won the trophy when it was first awarded in 1925, as well as in 1926. Burch also played for the Hamilton Tigers, Boston Bruins, and Chicago Blackhawks during a career that spanned 11 seasons. Upon retiring in 1933, Burch was the last remaining player in the NHL to have played for the Tigers.
