What were the first NHL hockey teams?

First NHL Teams Many cite an six original NHL hockey teams:

  • Montreal Canadiens
  • Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Boston Bruins
  • Detroit Red Wings
  • Chicago Black Hawks
  • New York Rangers

Here is more of the story.

In 1917, four teams -- the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Quebec Bulldogs -- joined together to form the National Hockey League. Since the Bulldogs were unable to play during the league's inaugural season, the remaining owners granted a temporary franchise to the Toronto Arena Company in order to balance out the schedule. This "temporary" franchise becames the Toronto St. Patricks in 1919, (the same season charter member Quebec was finally able to resume operations) and the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1926.

In that first season, after just six games, the Wanderers' rink burned to the ground, and the team "wandered" out of the league, never to be heard from again.

The Quebec Bulldogs became the Hamilton Tigers lasted 5 seasons in the early 20s. Then the Montreal Maroons and the Boston Bruins were born, and the "traditional" NHL takes shape in the 1930s. The Montreal Maroons actually enjoyed some success until the 1930s.

For those looking for a list of 12, they would be:

  • Toronto Arenas
  • Montreal Canadiens
  • Ottawa Senators
  • Montreal Wanderers
  • Quebec Bulldogs
  • Hamilton Tigers
  • Montreal Maroons
  • Boston Bruins (The franchise dates from 1924.)
  • Pittsburgh Pirates
  • New York Americans
  • Detroit Red Wings
  • Chicago Black Hawks

That brings us to 1926-27, by the way. Thanks to the NHL Official Guide and Record Book, for the exact team names.

The Senators became defunct in 1933-34, and the current franchise took the same name 60 years later.

How did the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team get their name?

The Black Hawks' first owner was coffee tycoon Frederic McLaughlin. He had been a commander with the 333rd Machine Gun Battalion of the 86th Infantry Division during World War I. This Division was nicknamed the "Blackhawk Division", after a Native American of the Sauk nation, Chief Black Hawk, who was a prominent figure in the history of Illinois. McLaughlin evidently named the hockey team in honor of the military unit, making it one of many sports team names using Native Americans as icons. For many years, the name was spelled primarily "Black Hawks", but sometimes "Blackhawks", even by the club itself. This ambiguity was finally settled in the summer of 1986 when the club officially decided on the one-word version based on the spelling found in the original franchise documents.

When did hockey come to Canada?

Hockey was not "introduced to Canada", it was first invented, or played as a game, in Canada in the late 1800's. Several areas of Canada have laid claim to being the site of the first game but no one actually knows for certain. For the best information on the origins of the game,I would suggest you read a good hockey history like Mr. Stan Fischler's Hockey Chronicles or go to Wikipedia and read various articles on the history of the game.

How do you qualify for the world championships in ice hockey?

Wow! It requires a LOT of training, a lot of dedication, and since Olympic sports are actually EXTREME sports, it requires a development of your attitude that is exceptionally focused on success REGARDLESS of your perceptions! Almost all Olympic contenders start REALLY young! It is not uncommon for "gifted" athletes to start training as young as 6 years old before they are old enough to qualify. Usually, hopefully, this is because the parents notice an athletic interest in their child and NOT because the child is "herded" into the activity! A male child likes trains? Buy him childrens' train books and train toys and model trains and talk to him about trains! A child likes to run competitively as a natural pastime? Then challenge him or her to run with you for "the best time", the "best endurance", and encourage him or her to join a children's athletic club! The rest will follow. The first aspect is, and I do not know if your question is related to YOUR interest or if this is just a general interest question or if this question is related to someone you know, but, HOW GOOD are you / is your friend or relative ??? I mean, in whatever aspect of athletic prowess you are considering, is there something abnormally outstanding about this person or about you? Do you or someone else swim better, faster, with more stamina than anyone else you see around you/him/her ????? That is a clue as to whether to go further in this pursuit. The second aspect is, if this is a noticeable trait, have you or has this person sought a training advisor, a professional trainer, or an organization that nurtures Olympic hopefuls? Yes, there are groups... some of them FUNDED by donations, to develop private groups of Olympic hopefuls to the point that they are legitimate contenders. Then there are those athletes who just rise naturally in the high school and college system and come to the attention of Olympic scouts, or a coach may recommend a student who rises to state finals or beyond to the Olympic training committee. I do not know how else to answer your question.

Who wore number 10 before Guy Lafleur?

Frank Mahovlich was the last Montreal Canadien to wear No. 10 before Guy Lafleur. The "Big M" was traded from Detroit to Montreal for Bill Collins, Mickey Redmond and Guy Charron just prior to the 1971 trade deadline and joined the club in Minneapolis, where the Habs were playing the Minnesota North Stars. Because Montreal had no No. 27 available (the number Frank had made famous with Toronto and Detroit), he was given No. 10, which had been Collins number before he was traded. Mahovlich wore No. 10 for two games before the team returned to Montreal and he was given his familiar No. 27. I believe it was Ted Harris, who was a defenseman for the Habs. it was C.McDonld
