What does just the icing on the cake mean?
For a synonym for "icing on the cake," meaning an extra benefit, we could use "gravy," or "a bonus" or the beautiful Creole ( from the Quechua via Spanish ) word "lagniappe," pronounced lan-yap. That's just the cherry on the Sundae.

How long does a Swiss roll cake last for with buttercream icing?
Yes!!! But to warn you... it wont taste as good as Grandmas freshed baked...
its fine to store it in the fridge/freeze, but just know that you will now have to bring it back to room temperature. Take it out HOURS before you need it, and let it get to room temp, then you will put it back on the mixer and with the PADDLE attachement on low- medium and let it mix, it will look as if it is BROKEN, and curdled, dont be alramed this is NATURAL, it will come back together eventually, you can turn the speed up to med-high and it will mix out smooth
What is the best cupcake frosting?
Butter cream is the best. (Powder sugar with butter and melted non sweetened chocolate)
www.cooksrecipes.com/category/cake.HTML
A very simple one is to add some milk or water, a little soft butter if you wish, and a dash of vanilla extract to a couple of cups of powdered sugar. Beat it until you get the consistancy you like. You can add cocoa powder to it as well, or flavor it with orange or lemon juice instead. You can make it thinner by adding more liquid, and thicker by adding more sugar.
thank you both for the recipe and for the website

What is a substitute for vanilla extract when frosting a cupcake?
I have used rum extract, almond extract, anise extract, and a bit of whiskey or vodka, or nothing at all, in place of vanilla in many different recipes including frosting. All without substantially causing a failure in the recipe. [The peppermint frosting went on chocolate cupcakes.] The vanilla is only to give the frosting a flavor other than just bland.
Experiment at will.
How long can cream cheese frosting sit out before going bad?
you know what, that could be your Science Fair! Really it depends on the brand, and the ingredients used. So I'm not gonna experient on the 200 brands of cream cheese, but it depends on the thickness, the quality, and the brand. Something for you to work out. Its worth the 2-3 days of possibly 70 years of your life. "wink"
Do you need milk in frosting recipes?
No. You need butter in most traditional ones. Cream cheese in some. Egg whites and sugar and vanilla in a classic one. Look up recipees for frosting on the internet and if you are allergic to an ingredient, look up those recipees that don't require it.
Can 7 minute frosting be made into divinity?
I don't think so. I don't remember exactly what goes into each, so just look up each recipe and see if the ingredients are similar and go from there.
How do you decorate a cake with zebra stripes with frosting?
Frost your entire cake with the primary color you wish to use. Pipe the secondary color on the cake in straight parallel lines. Turn the cake so that the stripes appear to be going from top to bottom. Take a small thin device, toothpicks work well, and carefully pull it through the surface of the icing. Go in a line from right to left. Move about an inch up and pull it through the icing going left to right. Keep going in lines switching directions. It will pull the lines of color through the primary icing. It would create an effect much like the cake labeled "Toothpick Frosting" in the related links below, except it would be striped instead of spiral.
For a more realistic zebra skin effect, you could also try the aerosol icing colors that are available at most grocery stores. You would frost your cake white and then basically "airbrush" the stripes where ever you would like them. It is fairly simple to use, even if it may be your first time.

These can both cover 12 small fairy/cup cakes or a 20cm cake.
These are instructions from the back of Tate+Lyle Icing sugar and from my own experience
Buttercream Icing75g of butter175g Icing Sugar
1 tbsp milk
Put the butter into a bowl then sift in the icing sugar and beat them together until they have started to mix in together. Once this happens add the milk and beat until the texture of the icing is thick and if you tilt the bowl to one side, the icing moves but super slowly. If it moves faster than super slowly, add a bit more icing sugar to get the mixture thickened.
Glacé Icing225g Icing sugar2-3 tbsp water
Sift the icing sugar into a bowl and slowly beat in the water to give a smooth icing. Make your you use it straight away
Hope I helped! Good luck!
