It was a two lap race with 7 cars and it had a racing surface composed of crushed stone sprayed with tar. On May 30, 1911 the first 500 mile race took place and was won by Ray Harroun at an average speed of 74.602 mph. Except during WW1 and WW2 there have been an 500 race. In 1912 the race became the highest paying sport event in the world when Carl Fisher increased the purse to 50,000 and the first prize was 20,000. So, to answer your question the race is 100 years old.
