James Cameron (writer/director/producer) had the idea and wrote an 80 page mini-script for the movie in 1994. Announcing in 1996 that he would begin making Avatar after the release of Titanic, Cameron was going to begin production in 1997 and planned to complete the film in 1999. Cameron soon decided that available technologies would not be able to properly create his vision, so he decided to put off making the film.
In 2005 Cameron began work on the movie again. The language development began, and in early 2006 he began work on the actual script, cultural development and components of his fictional universe. Principal photography began in mid 2007, with live photography starting in October of 2007. The official release date of the movie was December 18, 2009.

There are two main reasons:
- Many traditional cultures destroyed by invaders have had very close connections to the planet and/or the environment, for example the American Indians, the Australian Aborigines, etc. It is a well known cliche that the invading forces have absolutely no care factor for the native way of life or their protection of their local environment. Also, many tribal cultures already have as part of their culture protection of the environment as it helps their way of life stay sustainable
- The other reason is that people in Hollywood are very liberal and often try and draw the masses attention to the problems of the world, such as how much we are destroying the environment. They feel if they have the power to reach that many people they should at least send a message as well.

Opinion: I thought that Avatar was much better than the movie 2012. They both had formidable special effects, but 2012's were all overdone. In 2012, all the characters escaped from every scenario within an inch of their lives, which got extremely repetitive. However, in Avatar, the special effects were used in an entirely different way, they actually MADE the movie, as opposed to making it seem cheesy. Much of the acting in 2012 was over-the-top, and all in all, the movie held no higher meaning than big action-y blow ups, one after the other.
When will the movies stop showing avatar?

Who died in James Cameron's Avatar?
Tom Sully, the twin broth of Jake Sully, was shot days before shipping out for Pandora because he fell victim to a bank robbery on Earth. Grace Augustine was shot by Colonel Quaritch and wounded, which killed her after the Na'vi attempted to transfer her dying soul into her avatar body. She succumbed to her wombs and died in the arms of Jake Sully, however, Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role as Grace in Avatar 2. Trudy Chacon, the fighter pilot, also died when Quaritch outgunned her ship in the Assault on the Tree of Souls. Michelle Rodriguez has hinted at the possible return of Trudy in Avatar 2 as well. Sylwanin, Neytiri's other sister, died prior to the events of Avatar because she joined a hunt party that went out and attacked an RDA bulldozer. They were caught by RDA soldiers, but escaped adn ran to Grace's school with hopes that Grace would protect them, however they were ultimately killed, causing Grace to be banned from the Omaticaya clan (although she was allowed entry back in a few years later when Jake was admitted into the clan). Eytukan, Neytiri's father and Mo'at's wife, was killed when a shard of wood struck him in the torso during the Detsurction of Hometree. Lyle Wainfleet was killed during the Assault on the Tree of Souls (Wainfleet was killed by Hammerhead Titanotheres that trampled him in a stampede). Tsu'tey died when he was shot by an RDA soldier and then found in the forest below by Jake Sully, who mercifully killed him at his own request. Neytiri's ikran Seze died after a Scorpion gunship shot the ikran's back. Colonel Quaritch died as well when Neytiri's poisonous arrows pierced his chest, although his character may return in Avatar 2 as well. Private Sean Fike and Akwey (the leader of the Horse Clans) may or may not have survived the battle, it is unknown.
