Sense and Sensibility is set in various locations in southern England, mostly in Devonshire, near Exeter, in London and at fictional estates called Norland and Cleveland on the way between. What are some characteristics of Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice?

In the book, Austen gives very limited physical descriptions of her characters, including Darcy. One of the very few things she makes clear is that he is tall. The first--and really, only--description she gives of him is from Chapter 3, and merely says that he is tall, handsome, and has a noble air about him.

He has been portrayed in movies by Sir Laurence Olivier, Colin Firth, and Matthew Macfadyen, as well as others in knock-offs and retellings. All three of these men are dark-haired.

Why does mr Collins visit the bennet family in Pride and Prejudice?

The first time he visited was because he wanted a wife, and he figured he could quickly and easily get one of his cousins to marry him since he inherits the estate after the death of Mr. Bennet. The family would be able to stay in their house if Mr. Collins married one of the Bennet sisters.

The second time he came was when Lydia eloped with Mr. Wickham and brought the family misfortune and disgrace. Mr. Collins claimed to have come to offer his sympathy, but Elizabeth thinks it is because he wanted to congratulate himself in his own happy situation and flaunt it.

Why did Mr Darcy decide that Jane did not like Mr Bingley as much as Bingley liked her?

He says he thought Jane was not really interested in Bingley, so he thought it best if he prevented Bingley from falling too deeply in love with her.

I have thought for a long time there was also another reason, which he did not want to admit to Lizzy. It is clear in the novel that he is falling in love with Lizzy. He believes Lizzy is not a suitable match for him, and so at first he is thankful that his pride in his family will prevent him from falling in love. But when that fails, he is thankful for any reason to get away from her. And yet he is drawn to her and wants to dance with her. Unfortunately, Bingley is his best friend, and as long as Bingley is seeing Jane, Darcy will be exposed to Lizzy. He wants this to stop, so he has his own motive to keep Bingley and Jane apart, which is never expressed explicitly in the book.

Which Pride and Prejudice movie is better 1995 or 2005?

Yes,Pride and Prejudice got the best review from over 50 other 4 star movies all shown in theater, Pride and Prejudice got 5 stars in Hollywood in my eyes although some people may come to judge it at first glance, it really takes hard character to prove that it is one of a kind.

What is the significance of title of the sense and sensibility?

Sense as it pertains to the novel parallels with Elinor's character. Elinor is very reasonable and realistic and doesn't like to show her emotions.

Sensibility parallels with Marianne who is extremely emotional and romantic. She makes a show of her emotion and is very impulsive so she does whatever she feels without thinking of the consequences

(sidenote: the book was at one point called Elinor and Marianne before it changed to Sense and Sensibility)

Why does mr Collins decide to introduce himself to mr darcy in Pride and Prejudice?

Darcy introduces his letter knowing that he has to tempt Elizabeth into reading his letter, knowing that she would not willingly read anything which to do on the matter of their previous interactions. Therefore, in starting the letter he addresses her in a very polite and civil manner, with the following of his immediate assurance that he will not renew his marriage proposal to her. He concludes his introduction paragraph with a compliment to Elizabeth, further encouraging her to read what he has to tell her by writing that she will read it not because of what she feels on the matter, but because of her justice. Here forth meaning that he is complimenting her on her judgment.

Following this introduction he attempts to explain to her why he took Bingley away from Jane when the likelihood of marriage was so great. Also he included the telling of his connection and encounters with Wickham in order to justify his behavior and actions towards the man, and clarify the untruthful tellings Wickham had so unjustly bestowed on Darcy. This is as well as to warn Elizabeth of his true character because he is aware of her past partiality towards the man and he wanted to clarify that Wickham had only the appearance of a good man, while Darcy had all the actual goodness himself.

What is Mr Darcy's occupation in Pride and Prejudice?

Mr. Darcy is a gentleman. He has no occupation.

He is wealthy because he owns a great estate, described as being ten miles around, which would mean possibly 3000 or 4000 acres. On this estate are farms and villages, which he owns, and the tenants pay rent or provide products of their labor in lieu of rent.

He could have had an occupation, had he decided to do so. His cousin, Col. Fitzwilliam, went into the military, which Darcy could have done. And there were a few men wealthier than Darcy who went into the church. But it was unnecessary for him to do any of these things. He did have matters of business, which he attended to, and though we know Wickham's father managed Darcy's estate for Darcy's father, we have no indication that there was a steward or manager for Darcy, so it is possible he did this himself.

Mr. Gardiner sends a note to Mr. Bennet saying that Lydia and Wickham have been found. They are not married, and they (or perhaps just Wickham) have not intention of being married, but they will marry if Mr. Bennet provides them with a hundred pounds per year, while he lives, and sees to it Lydia gets her share of the 5000 pounds left Mrs Bennet and the daughters when he dies.

Is Sense and Sensibility a good book?

I think answering this question requires a very fine definition of what a didactic novel is.

Personally, I would say Sense and Sensibility is a didactic novel, meaning that it is primarily intended to instruct, but the reason I would say this is entirely because I believe Jane Austen would not have written it without intending a strong moral message, and the entertainment value is secondary to that.

Nevertheless, the reaction to it is almost entirely on of being entertained, and the feeling of being taught or instructed is almost entirely absent. So I would be inclined to accept an answer saying it was not didactic.

Who cared for Emma in Jane Austen novel Emma?

Emma is about a young girl who wants to be a matchmaker to her friends and fails. In the end, everything falls into place and she finds her own love, Mr. Knightly.

This book is about how it is possible to overlook any faults in a person, no matter how big, and be ready to accept that person the way they are. It is about how love has the power to make better things happen, and also to accept anything that comes in their way completely.
