They were famous in Liverpool in 1962. They became nationally famous in 1963 - essentially with the release of Please, Please Me - and after a performance on Thank Your Lucky Stars in January 1963.

He played both. You can tell in different songs that he did. Plus, anyone who can play an acoustic can play an electric, because acoustic guitars are so much bigger it makes playing an electric seem simple. You can definitely tell the difference of what he is playing in his different songs.
