How did William quantrill die?
Capt. Quantrill was shot in the shoulder and the bullet ranged down
and left him paralyzed. He was shot by John Langford of Spencer
County, Ky. Quantrill was shot May 10, 1865 and died June 6 in
Louisville. My books "The Silent Riders" and "Confederate Guerrilla
Sue Mundy" explain the circumstances of hixs mortal wounding. The
latter of the two book is sold by Amazon and Barnes and Noble. I
found what was the only real photo of Quantrill and it appears in my latter
book. Since the publication of the "Mundy" book, I have confirmed
a second photo of Quantrill, taken at the same time as the first. I
have an 1851 Colt .36 caliber Navy revolver that was dug up by a farmer
exactly where Quantrill was shot. I also have a lock of Quantrill's hair
given to me by the Langford family. John Langford clipped off the lock
after learning Quantrill's identity. I have 17 years of Quantrill research,
including a photo of Quantrill's mother, a photo of the cemetery keeper
who showed the location os Quantrill's grave to his mother and the man
she hired to dig him up. Much of Quantrill's remains are still in the
Saint John's Cemetery on Louisville's west side, although his upper arm
bones are in Kansas and his skull has been reburied in Dover, Ohio.
I have many tape recordings of people whose families had information
on the last days of Quantrill. One of the saddest elements of the story
if the theft of Quantrill's sash, stolen from Spaulding Hall Museum in
