Three years later, in 1513, he sailed to the North American coast, where he sighted and explored Florida, giving it its modern name. He at first thought it was another large island. After returning to Spain, he commanded an expedition to establish a permanent Florida colony in 1521, but was seriously wounded in a battle with the native tribes and died soon afterward.

It was not true. In march 1513 he lead an expedition to Florida. He thought that he was the first Europeans to reach Florida found nothing and started a settlement. They attacked the north Americans and the settlers left.

On his final voyage in 1521, he carried another company of about 200, but most were colonists for his proposed settlement on the Gulf coast in southwestern Florida. A native attack ruined his plans by chasing away the settlers, and poison from a native arrow eventually caused his death, shortly after their return to Cuba.
