K2 Mountain

The name K2 is derived from the Great Trigonometric Survey of India in the 1850's. Thomas Montgomerie, a British surveyor, made the first survey of the Karakorum, a large mountain range spanning the borders between Pakistan, India and China, and sketched the two most prominent peaks, labelling them K1 and K2.

Mount k2 is a part of a range called the Karakorum range. So as two plates collide with each other one sinks in and that is basically how a volcano erupt, so when a volcano erupts it lets out lava now when there is a range it is obviously possible that there would be a side vent, so lava flows out of there forming another volcano which will cool down and be a volcano. One mountain in mount k-2 or Mount Everest..!!

Well, not quite. The geologic evidence suggests that the area of central Asia where the Indian plate collided with the Asian plate to create the Himalayas, Pamir, Kun Lun, and Karakoram mountain chains is hundreds of millions of years old. Even so, it is the YOUNGEST area of mountain-building on the planet. "Young" mountains are high, steep, and snowy, whereas "old" mountains like the Appalachians in the eastern US, are quite a bit older, and have been worn down by wind and water erosion.

On K2 mountain, temperatures can drop as low as -60°C (-76°F) during the winter months. The average temperature on the summit ranges between -36°C (-32°F) and -27°C (-17°F) throughout the year.

The first woman to summit K2 was Wanda Rutkiewicz on 23 June 1986. Wanda Rutkiewicz was a Polish mountain climber and was born on the 4th February 1943 but she sadly died on the 12th/13th May 1992 while climbing Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world.

Achille Compagnoni (26 September 1914 - 13 May 2009) was an Italian mountaineer and skier. On the 31st July 1954 he became the second climber to have reached the summit of K2. He was a member of the K2 Italian Expedition that also put Lino Lacedelli on the summit, making him the first person to stand on the summit of K2.

In 1889 Hans Meyer returned to Kilimanjaro with the celebrated Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller for a third attempt. Their climbing team included two local headmen, nine porters, a cook, and a guide. The success of this attempt, which started on foot from Mombasa, was based on the establishment of many campsites with food supplies so that multiple attempts at the top could be made without having to descend too far. Meyer and Purtscheller pushed to near the crater rim on October 3, but turned around exhausted from hacking footsteps in the icy slope. Three days later they reached the highest summit on the southern rim of the crater on Purtscheller's 40th birthday, October 6, 1889.
