The kiwi is native to New Zealand.

The name is taken from the kiwi birds native to New Zealand, one of the places where kiwifruit are grown. The name also suggests an appearance similar to those birds. The other name for the brown, furry, egg-shaped fruit is "Chinese gooseberry". This was not as popular in marketing but does correctly identify China as another of the Southeast Asia locations where they are grown.

Apparently, a Wanganui Schoolmistress, Mary Fraser bought some seeds back to NZ in 1906, and these were planted.

Fast forward to 1924 when Hayward Wright in 1924 introduced his improved cultivar which is the basis of most of today's industry.

Kiwifruit was first known as Chinese Gooseberry, but that name did not sit well in the US, so Kiwifruit was substituted. (But not trademarked!!) hence the modern trademarked name of Zespri.

More recently, a variety from India has been crossbred to produce the golden variety, which is a nicer fruit. (There may be a red variety in the pipeline?)

Italy is the major producer today of Kiwifruit, and Chile is another major producer.

Yes, I live in Guyana and have managed to germinate a few. Whether or not they bear fruit is a question I'll have to wait 4years to find out as kiwi plants need over 400hours chill before the blossoms will set. That said, they're still growing so I'll wait and see.

it depends on the dog. ,. . . . if your dog has a sensitive stomach than it wasnt probably a very good idea and the dog will get very very very very very sick. but if your dog dosent have problems in eating food i wouldn't worry about it, the dog will tough it out.

Possibly you are thinking of the "kiwi fruit". This fruit did not actually originate from New Zealand, but came from a plant native to southern China. It was cultivated in New zealand and renamed the kiwifruit.
