What are the benefits to breast feeding your baby?
B/c that's why women have breasts. We aren't baby cows when we are born, we are baby humans - and human mothers' milk is designed for the growth and development of a human baby. I don't even consider formula an option, manmade chemicals (that recently were recalled b/c of broken glass found in containers). Not to mention the emotional welfare of your child, it is a natural instinct to suckle ... so why postphone that with a pacifier @ birth? Studies have shown breastfed babies: Are not likely to become obese adults, are not likely to break bones, are not likely to get ill (or ear infections) ... My 13 month old, has yet to have a diaper rash, ear infection, cold, runny nose. Oh yeah, it's best for mommies too, b/c I'm slimmer than my post pregnancy weight (b/c bf keeps your uterus contracting = exercise without effort) and it's natural birth control - I've yet to start my menses (awesome)!

Why do breast hurt when you hear a baby cry?
A mother is naturally attuned to the needs of her child. Infants can only communicate by crying and a mother is intuitively listening for those cries. When a baby cries out in hunger, all mothers take notice. Most especially those mothers who are currently breast feeding. It is not uncommon for a nursing mother to hear the cry from a baby who is not her's and have her brain tell her breasts to get ready nurse the hungry child. It is this message that is causing your breasts to hurt a little. This message can often lead to a spontaneous letdown reflex. One common term for this natural response to care for a child is "Sympathetic Letdown."

What to do if your baby does not want to nurse?
I assume by not satisfying the baby you mean you are questioning if your child is getting enough milk. There are three things to watch. The first is proper breast feeding technique. If you have any question about this, get the counsel of a good lactation consultant. She can help coach you through this time. Often, babies have growth spurts where the mother's breast milk supply has to play catch up with how much milk the baby needs. Secondly, are you getting enough good food in your own diet? If in doubt, eat lots of green vegetables, plenty of fruits, and whole grains. Don't let yourself get sidetracked by following advice that requires some "special and better" foods or supplements. Eating the good stuff that nature has for us is the best. And yes, don't forget to drink plenty of water. Third and last is the issue of adequate breast stimulation. If your baby is not patient and quickly moves away from your breast, you may not be getting enough stimulation from your child's suckling to give your breasts the message that more milk is needed. If this is the case, your lactation consultant may recommend that you use a breast pump to provide the stimulation needed. Hope this helps, let me know.
