What is social landscape?

Social landscape refers to the collective characteristics, behaviors, and interactions of individuals within a particular society or community. It encompasses the social structures, norms, values, and relationships that shape how people interact and influence one another within a specific social setting. Understanding the social landscape is crucial for studying societal issues, cultural dynamics, and interpersonal dynamics.

How are plains formed?

# Plains are formed when everything in the land weathered or eroded away, leaving the land flat. # Another way the plains are formed is when a volcano erupts and burns everything in its way, all that is left are the plains. This makes bare land or barren plains.
Plains are formed in several different ways. The most common are from a dried up lake or a glacier moving past an area. Both of which leave a flat almost concave surface which geologists call a plain.

What does the ha-ha in Mansfield Park signify?

A ha-ha is a barrier. It is made by digging a ditch in the ground, deep and wide enough that it cannot be easily crossed. The purpose of having a ha-ha rather than a fence or hedgerow is so a person can see a peasant view unobstructed.

The ha-ha, as a barrier, symbolizes other kinds of unseen restraint, such as moral or ethical values. There is a locked gate, through which people can pass if they have a key, but Henry Crawford and Maria Bertram find a way to sneak through. This presages their violation of rules of morals and ethics later in the book.

How much should you charge for landscaping?

This is a great question.

In my area, in the San Francisco Bay Area, the average residential landscaping budget is between $20,000 and $50,000. A large project is $100,000. Rarely a project may be $250,000 or more on a large estate. Before the economic downturn, by comparison, the average landscaping project used to be between $50,000 to $80,000.

Pricing Trends: The average home value is around $1,000,000 in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo counties. When compared with the drop in real estate prices, housing did not drop more than around 15% to 20%, whereas landscaping project budgets have dropped by more than half. Many people are now choosing not to do everything at once that they would like to have done in their landscaping projects, choosing instead to phase in landscaping improvements over time.

Does this mean that you must spend a certain amount more or less than your neighbors? I never encourage people to force themselves into a budget, but do their research to make balanced choices and informed decisions about what they want for the outdoors of their home.

  • An average front yard remodel on an average single family 50ft x 100ft flat lot (no slopes or hillsides to contend with) with planting, lighting, automatic irrigation, a new driveway and walkways, maybe some pilasters with post lamps, etc. could be $25,000 to $40,000.
  • An average backyard remodel on that same typical lot may run the same or slightly higher.
  • A bare minimum front yard remodel on an average size lot, say 50ft x 100ft with planting, lighting, automatic irrigation and maybe a new walkway starts at $10,000.
  • A bare minimum backyard remodel on average is slightly more at the basic starter budget of $15,000, if you perhaps add in a small patio, and maybe a shade structure such as a wood arbor.
  • A pool can average $20,000 to $60,000 depending upon size and features.
  • An outdoor kitchen can be around $25,000 to $50,000.

By contrast, in the neighboring Sacramento Delta area, prices are lower across the board and your dollar stretches further. However housing prices are much lower there, which is reflected accordingly in the local construction economy. I'm sure this difference in housing and construction costs adjusts widely across the country in various local economies reflective of differences housing, labor and materials costs, as well as the costs of doing business.

Again, the best thing is to do your homework on pricing in your local area first, before making a major investment in landscaping.

What is the difference between the cultural landscape in the built landscape?

The cultural landscape refers to the ways in which human culture interacts with and shapes the natural environment, encompassing elements like traditions, practices, and historical significance. In contrast, the built landscape specifically focuses on the physical structures and infrastructure created by humans, such as buildings, roads, and urban design. While the built landscape is a component of the cultural landscape, the latter also includes intangible aspects like social practices and cultural meanings associated with a place. Thus, the cultural landscape provides a broader context that includes both the built and natural environments.

What landscapes are there?

Some common types of landscapes include mountains, deserts, forests, beaches, grasslands, and urban areas. Each landscape has unique physical features, vegetation, and wildlife that make them distinct from each other. Explore and appreciate the diversity of landscapes found around the world.

Why was the ravine sandy?

The ravine was sandy likely due to erosion and sediment deposition from water flow. Over time, sand and other particles may have been carried into the ravine by wind or water, creating a sandy bed.

How the timbers are treated?

They are loaded onto carts and closed in a large vessel where liquid with the active chemicals is pumped in at high pressure to force the liquid into the wood. There are two different ways it is done. The way that is used for building materials starts with kiln dried wood and land scape timbers are generally done wet. What this does is not allow as much treatment into the landscape timbers and they will rot sooner. You may see "treated to refusal" on the landscape timbers. This means they pressurized the vessel, but due to the water already in the wood the treatment did not reach the core.
