The above answer is fairly accurate, however to be more specific, it's not Infra-Red signals that determine whether a tag is scored as much as it is FM signals, much like the frequencies used in radio.

I know for a fact that pure laser tag, without IR or FM first existed commercially in 1986 and used solar cells as receivers. Why it never really took off until recently I do not know.

If someone literally hits you with the laser housing, yes, there's potiential that it could hurt. However if you're referring specifically to the laser beam itself, then no, it does not hurt. The lasers are a lower class of laser than those used for surgery or as a cutting tool. They're a lower class (i.e. lower intensity) than the typical laser pointer.

That said, I wouldn't recommend purposely firing the laser into your eye repeatedly.

so, if someone shoots u, it doesn't hurt at all. but if they hit u with the gun (like being pistol lashed) yeah, that hurts. The lasers basicaly a beam of light, whoch communicates with your sensors. so if it hits your arm, you won't even feel it. But dont shoot into anone's eyes(yes, including your own)
