No, since Christopher Meloni could not come to a contract agreement with Wolf Productions, he had to be written out of the script. At the end of Season 12, in the episode 'Smoked', the character Detective Stabler shoots a a woman in the squad room after the woman shoots two other people. In the Season 13 opener, 'Scorched Earth', Stabler does not appear; the staff discusses how he quit his job over being forced to kill the woman in the previous episode.

Since they chose not to kill off Detective Stabler, perhaps they were hoping to make a deal for guest appearances in the future.

Actor Christopher Meloni was born in 1961; he will be 50 years old in 2011; Elliot Stabler would be around the same age as the actor. On SVU, Elliot and his wife Kathy have five children; Christopher Meloni and his wife Sherman Williams have two, a daughter and a son.

Elliott didn't appear, his resignation was discussed by the other characters so we would know why he wasn't there. That's a good sign because they didn't kill him off. This may not be quite the final curtain for Detective Goren, though. D'Onofrio teased back in September when his departure was announced, "For all my loyal 'CI' fans, I wouldn't be surprised if Goren pops up from time to time."

The sound effect that characterizes the opening and change of scenes on Law and Order is actually a combination of about a dozen sounds that is said to include a judge's gavel banging. The sound is deliberately layered so that no single element is identifiable.

They say it's the sound of a judge's gavel as it echos in the head of the accused.

There's not suppose to be an ending to that episode. It just ends on the judge's clerk giving them the descision slip. Draw your own inferences.
