I would advise you and other students to do their homework. Homework may often times seem tedious and at times overwhelming. However, there are many benefits to doing homework. Homework is a great way to practice your academic skills until you reach mastery or until you have a better understanding of the concepts. It also gives you the opportunity to work independently. Homework fosters discipline and responsibility. Doing homework is another way to help you remember facts and is often looked at as a form of studying. The act of doing homework prepares you for different aspects of your student life such as high school, college and post secondary work. Overall, doing homework is a positive choice and I strongly recommend doing homework that is assigned to you!

Word problems are math calculations that are just written out as stories instead of as plain calculations. The trick is to figure out what the calculation is. Read the story carefully and write down all of the numbers first. Then, see what you need to do with those numbers.

Set a timer. Give yourself 15 minutes to work, then take 5 minutes and go do something else like exercise or get a snack. The little breaks keep your mind fresh and working up to speed. The timer keeps you from rushing or dawdling. Once your work is done, take another 15 minutes to check over it to make sure you didn't rush too fast and miss something.

If you just sit there you might not understand and remember what instructions you've been given. Taking notes not only writes them down so you can read them again later, but it also helps you to learn better as you write, because you're essentially repeating the instructions over to yourself. There are many reasons for taking notes. Usually, students take notes to help them to remember key points in the lecture. (There is documented research which shows that writing something down aids our brain in recalling it later.) Students also take notes to highlight certain concepts the instructor may ask about in a future quiz. And sometimes, students take notes because they don't understand some aspect of the lecture, and writing it down serves as a reminder to find out more about that topic (in the library, online, or by asking other students). Thus, it is not true that you only take notes on what you understand-- when I was a student, I often wrote down ideas that were not clear to me, and then I went to the library to find out more about them.

The first place you should look for your homework folder is in desk drawers. Then look under the bed. In your car. In a group of papers. If you can't find it anywhere confess you can't find your homework folder anywhere. Then follow your teachers advice. You never know.
