Here are some tips to help you un-learn bad habits so that you can replace them with healthier habits. * Become aware of the habit - once you realize that you are doing something that has become a bad habit, you can begin working on ways to stop yourself from doing that. * Set up a reward system - every time you succeed in resisting the bad habit, put money into a jar and use it to buy something you really want once you have broken the habiit, or set up a token system with your parents and save tokens instead of money, then trade the tokens in for a favor or other sort of reward from your parents. * Every time you catch yourself doing the habit, tell yourself "Stop!" and either think about something else - or if it is a physical habit, change your behaviour and do something else. If you want to quit biting your fingernails, for example, say "Stop!" and exercise your hands with an exercise ball, or draw a picture instead. * Get your friends and family to help out. Ask them to point out to you the times that you are doing the bad habit - not in a mean way, but just to help you catch yourself and change the behavior. You can even make a "secret code" where if they see you doing it, they say something like "I spy," or "Watch out."
You try and change them for the better. So let's just take smoking as an example. You'll need support and a friend and motivation to do it. If you are having a problem learning the material in that class, you can visit your counselor and try to switch your schedule at the change of semesters. The best thing to do is to set up an environment that works to your benefit -- quiet, away from a hallway, do one thing at a time where you will not be interrupted at your task. According to the latest scientific data I can find, here are some basic numbers:
- Elementary School (Grades 1 through 6) - you should be spending less than an hour on each set of homework, with most of your assignments being done in about 15 or 20 minutes
- Middle School (Grades 7 through 8 or 9) - you should be spending about an hour on each set of homework, with most assignments being done in 30 to 45 minutes

That would depend on a couple factors. What kind of school do you attend, e.g. public, private, college prep, university? What grade are you in, e.g. middle school, high school, college, graduate? How many classes are you taking?
I will assume you are at the secondary level (high school). I would estimate you should have about 2-4 hours of homework. This time would very depending on how well you understand the material and how fast you are at doing your work (or how fast you can read).

*First, let me just say that the reason why they assign so much homework is because of the fact that, kids like you all, cannot spell or write a paragraph right. If you would pay attention in class, then you would have no problem with homework.
Second, it's because of kids like you all that teachers and adults talk down about us all the time. I go to high school with so many kids that still don't know how to read, write, spell, or write a sentence correctly that it reflects on me. It reflects on students that actually pay attention and do what they are told but, because of the fact that the majority of the students don't care, that the smart ones are treated like they're dumb.

*I agree with the fact that NO ONE should EVER have homework because it is a waste of time, energy, and it can give kids stress. Homework can also get in the way of fresh air, studying for important tests, reading, and practicing sports/musical instruments. Unfortunately, most homework is horribly arduous.
But, I also believe that homework is necessary. Without it, kids probably wouldn't know how to spell or understand (for example) chemical equations or the meaning of the spanish word "haber." Also, we should keep the normal 6-8 hour school day and have it Tuesday through Friday (Monday seems to always be a kind of sad/bad day). Instead of going from 6 to 2 (or 7 AM, whenever people wake up), we should wake up for school around 7:30 or 8 and arrive at/start school around 9:20. This would at least seem better than waking up at 6 AM and having to suffer from then to about 11 AM (or whatever time people wake up normally on weekends/summer vacation). We would then leave school around 2:30, get home around 3, and still have some time to do.
